CGC Adeniyi Pledges Customs’ Support for Nigeria’s $1tn Economy Target

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has pledged the full support of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) towards achieving Nigeria’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.
Adeniyi made the commitment on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, while delivering a keynote address at the New Nigeria Festival held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Conference Hall in Abuja.
He said the $1 trillion economic target was achievable, provided that the plans and strategies developed by the government were effectively implemented and translated into measurable outcomes.
According to him, the Nigeria Customs Service had moved beyond discussions and policy ideas to taking concrete steps that support the country’s economic aspirations.
He cited the Service’s ongoing Modernisation Reforms, including the deployment of B’Odogwu, the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme and the Advance Ruling mechanism, as key initiatives aimed at facilitating legitimate trade, improving predictability in the trading environment and strengthening revenue generation.
“Execution is nothing if it is not concrete. We have to move from ideas to action and ensure that whatever we plan translates into results. That is how we can begin to see the kind of transformation we are talking about,” he said.
The Customs boss stressed that achieving a $1 trillion economy was not the responsibility of government agencies alone, noting that it required the collective commitment of institutions, businesses and citizens.
He said the NCS, given its responsibilities for revenue collection, trade facilitation and border management, was strategically positioned to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic transformation.
Adeniyi therefore called for a shift from rhetoric to implementation, stressing that the country’s economic ambition could only be realised when institutions and citizens took ownership of their responsibilities and converted plans into practical and measurable results.
