Comrade Idris Miliki, Executive Director, CHRCR, calls for Peace and Credibility of the process as Campaign Kicks Off for Kogi LG Elections
Campaigns for the Kogi State local government elections officially commenced on May 20, 2026, as the State Independent Electoral Commission began activities outlined in its 2026 election timetable.
In a press statement, the Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, CHRCR, called on SIEC to adhere strictly to its schedule and guidelines to ensure a level playing field for all parties and candidates. The group said credibility of the process and stakeholder confidence are critical to delivering free and fair elections at the grassroots.
CHRCR urged political parties and candidates to operate within the provisions of the Kogi State Electoral Law 2025 and Nigeria’s Electoral Act, stressing that elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair. It also advised against inflammatory statements and urged citizens to engage through charters of demand during the campaign period.
The rights group appealed to Governor Alhaji Usman Ododo to provide SIEC with the necessary resources to enable timely preparations, including procurement and other logistics, in line with the 2025 Kogi electoral law.
On security, CHRCR called on agencies to remain neutral and provide adequate protection before, during, and after the polls. It also tasked the media with professional reporting and avoiding misinformation and fake news.
“Election is not a do-or-die. It is ballot and not bullet,” the statement read.
The release was signed by Idris Miliki Abdul, Executive Director of CHRCR, in Lokoja on May 20, 2026.
