CP DANTAWAYE RECEIVES NEW RESIDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER (REC), INEC KOGI ON A COURTESY VISIT, STRENGTHENS COLLABORATION ON ELECTION SECURITY MANAGEMENT AHEAD OF BY-ELECTION AND VOTER REGISTRATION

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, psc has today 10th July, 2025 received in audience the newly deployed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr. Tersoo O. Agundu alongside the Acting Administrative Secretary, and other Heads of Departments at the State Police Headquarters in Lokoja. The visit aimed at fostering collaboration and reaffirming strategic partnership toward ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process in the state.

During the interface, the new REC, INEC appreciated the Nigeria Police Force for its pivotal role in election security and acknowledged the Commissioner of Police as the co-chair of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). He described his visit as necessary to officially introduce himself and seek proactive synergy as the State prepares for the forthcoming by-election in Dekina.

The REC further highlighted the sensitive nature of elections, irrespective of size, noting that “election evokes emotions, and emotions can provoke reactions.” He emphasized the indispensable role of the Nigeria Police in maintaining peace and public order during such civic exercises. He further briefed the CP on the upcoming activities, including the kickoff of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise scheduled for August, stressing the need for security support and intelligence sharing throughout the electoral process and the commission’s planned operations across various local government areas.

In his response, the Commissioner of Police warmly welcomed the new REC to Kogi State expressing readiness to collaborate fully with the Commission. He described the Kogi Police Command current management team as officers with experience already attuned to the expectations and dynamics of electoral security.

The CP assured the REC of his unwavering commitment to strengthen security collaboration for a seamless electoral processes in Kogi State.

He also emphasized the importance of taking security precautions seriously, stating that even minor lapses in electoral logistics or movement could pose risks, especially in the local terrain. He encouraged INEC to work closely with all security formations for guidance and effective deployment.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with mutual commitments for enhanced security to uphold a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process in Kogi State.
