Kano -Former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Architect Aminu Dabo, has urged Nigerian authors and writers to expand the scope of their publications by devoting greater attention to healthcare delivery, maternal and child health, research and other critical areas of national development.
Dabo made the call in a goodwill message to the Women of Words Writers Association during its second anniversary celebration, held at the Mambayya House Auditorium, Bayero University, Kano, at Gidan Mallam Aminu Kano, Gwammaja Quarters.
The former NPA boss, who is also the proprietor of a group of private health colleges in Kano, challenged writers to look beyond entertainment-oriented literature and explore subjects that could contribute meaningfully to addressing societal challenges and improving the quality of life of Nigerians.
He particularly encouraged authors to produce more books on healthcare delivery, with emphasis on issues affecting women and young children, noting that such publications could serve as valuable resources for health institutions, libraries, students, medical professionals and researchers.
According to him, literature should not only entertain readers but also educate the public, preserve knowledge and provide practical solutions to the challenges confronting society.
Dabo’s message, delivered by his Media and Publicity Aide, Alhaji Abdullahi Usman, stressed the importance of research-based writing and the preservation of intellectual works for present and future generations.
He urged members of the association to ensure that their publications were supported by thorough research, reliable information and sound documentation to enhance their credibility and usefulness.
The former NPA managing director noted that well-researched books and other literary materials could become enduring references for students, professionals and policymakers, while helping younger generations benefit from the knowledge and experiences of those who came before them.
He further emphasised that authors had an important role to play in documenting knowledge, promoting public awareness and contributing to the development of education, healthcare and other vital sectors of the economy.
Dabo commended the Women of Words Writers Association for its initiative and achievements during its two years of existence, describing the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on its progress and strengthen its contribution to literary development.
He also expressed appreciation to the association for inviting him to serve as the special guest of honour and for recognising his contributions with an award.
He wished the association continued success in its future activities, encouraging its members to remain committed to producing publications that would benefit society and stand the test of time.
The anniversary celebration attracted dignitaries, writers, authors and other guests from different parts of Kano metropolis and neighbouring states, providing an opportunity for literary engagement, recognition of outstanding contributions and the promotion of reading and writing.
A major highlight of the event was the launching of a book titled Mutuwar Kasko (Death of a Clay Pot), adding to the literary activities marking the association’s second anniversary.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of certificates of appreciation to individuals and members of the association whose contributions helped make the event successful.
The celebration underscored the importance of literary associations in encouraging authorship, supporting emerging writers and creating platforms for the exchange of ideas and experiences.
As the Women of Words Writers Association enters another year of its existence, Dabo’s message presents a challenge to writers to broaden their creative horizons and produce works that combine literary excellence with practical relevance to society.
His call also reinforces the need for Nigerian literature to serve as a repository of knowledge, a tool for public enlightenment and a lasting contribution to the country’s educational, healthcare and social development.
