The Deputy Senate President (DSP), Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of innocent travelers from the Northern parts of Nigeria in Uromi village, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The DSP, deeply dismayed by the tragic incident, has called on security agencies to immediately arrest those responsible for the senseless killings and ensure that they face the full force of the law.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir, the DSP expressed his shock upon learning of the attack, which targeted a group of Northern travelers on their way to Kano for the Sallah celebration. The travelers, who were reportedly hunters, were ambushed by armed youths who blocked the road and mercilessly killed them. In addition to the horrific loss of life, the assailants also stole the victims’ belongings, including money and other valuables.
Senator Barau condemned the killings as a “disturbing act” and described it as “unfair,” emphasizing the need for swift action from security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. He called on the security forces in Edo State to take immediate steps to apprehend those involved in this heinous crime.
He further appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and allow the law to take its course, assuring them that those responsible for the killings would not be allowed to go unpunished. “We will ensure that justice is done,” he said. “I will take this matter to the Upper Chamber for further deliberation to ensure that the law is upheld, and the perpetrators are held accountable.”
The DSP noted that he had received numerous calls from concerned Nigerians, particularly from his Senatorial zone, who were deeply affected by the incident. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the peaceful repose of their souls.
Senator Barau emphasized the importance of unity and peace among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups, calling for an end to such senseless acts of violence. “Nigeria is a country with diverse tribes, and we should live in peace with one another, treating each other as one family,” he said.
Finally, the DSP sent his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure that justice prevails and that such an atrocity would not go unpunished. He reiterated his commitment to seeking justice for the victims and ensuring that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
