18 supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi state have been reportedly intercepted and attacked on their way to attending a solidarity Road Walk for peaceful campaigns and elections in the state.
Three of the victims were said to have been injured and hospitalized following machete cuts on their bodies.
Confirming the incident, the Ezza North coordinator of Odozi Obodo Youths Assembly, Comrade Okechukwu Onele, noted that the PDP supporters were allegedly intercepted by two Officials of Ebonyi state government along Nkaliki while heading to the venue of the event.
Onele specifically named the Special Assistant to Ebonyi state Governor on Internal Security (Airport), Hon. Franklin Enyi and his colleague, Mr Haggai Nwokpor as the attackers.
According to the Youths Coordinator: “I was the one that mobilised the PDP supporters for the event. They were 18 PDP supporters inside the bus. The two Special Assistants to Ebonyi state Governor on Internal Security, Mr Franklin Enyi and Haggai Nwokpor intercepted the bus at Police Post Junction along Nkaliki road while heading to the event. The two attackers further diverted the bus to Egundieze in Oriuzor, Ezza North local government area where they tortured with machete cuts on their heads and other parts of their bodies”.
He further explained that it took the intervention of a traditional ruler from the community to secure the release of the victims from the attackers.
Meanwhile, the organisers of the Peace Walk condemned the spate of political violence, intimidation and attacks on the opposition parties by suspected agents of the ruling APC, recalling that over 8 persons have been killed within the last three months of electioneering in the state.
The over 5,000 demonstrators, under the banner of Concerned Ebonyi Youths for Democracy marched through Abakaliki Hatchery road to Speradeo junction, before heading back to a popular hotel in Nkaliki.
They carried placards with various inscriptions: Peaceful protest is not rebellion; Stop violence against the people; We seek a state where every citizen can speak, assemble and live without fear among others.
A stakeholder, Dr Jerry Uhuo while addressing the supporters noted that the event was a peaceful road walk against political violence, intimidation, attacks and suppression of opposition parties in the state.
Uhuo alleged that the state government resorted to violence because of poor performance and bad governance for the past three years, reiterating that no amount of attacks would stop the victory of the PDP governorship candidate, Dr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii in the 2027 election.
