Ekpan Community Renewed Hope Estate: A Passionate Appeal to Governor Oborevwori, Festus Keyamo to Revive Stalled Housing Project and Restore Hope
By Wilson Macaulay
EKPAN
The Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will become more meaningful and impactful to ordinary Nigerians when its promises are translated into visible development projects that directly improve the living conditions of the people.
One of the most practical ways of renewing public confidence in government is not necessarily to embark on new projects alone, but also to identify, revive and complete abandoned projects that have already consumed public resources and raised the expectations of citizens.
Indeed, the revival of abandoned projects represents a powerful demonstration of governmental responsibility, continuity, accountability and commitment to sustainable development. It sends a clear message that government does not merely initiate projects for ceremonial purposes but is genuinely concerned about delivering the benefits of such investments to the people.
It is against this background in the spirit and letter of developmental journalism,
on behalf of Ekpan community in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State l am making this passionate and constructive appeal to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Hon. Festus Keyamo, SAN, and the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, to urgently intervene in the prolonged delay surrounding the Renewed Hope Estate project located in Ekpan.
Many relevant stakeholders of like mind and the community people believes that the project, which generated considerable excitement and expectations when the groundbreaking ceremony was performed, should not be allowed to remain stalled indefinitely, particularly at a time when the housing deficit in Nigeria continues to constitute a major social and developmental challenge.
In keeping with the principle of commendation before complaint, the people of Ekpan wish to first express their profound appreciation to Hon. Festus Keyamo, SAN, for his role in facilitating the Renewed Hope Estate project to Delta State and for recognising the importance of extending the benefits of the Federal Government’s housing initiative to the people of Ekpan .
The community also acknowledges the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for its prompt response in providing the land required for the project, thereby creating the necessary foundation for its actualisation in Delta State. May God Almighty in His infinite mercy bless the two of them beyond their expectations.
These contributions deserve commendation because development is most effective when there is purposeful collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments and host communities.
For the people of Ekpan, the arrival of the Renewed Hope Estate was more than the announcement of another government project. It represented a significant opportunity to address the housing challenges confronting families, improve the physical outlook of the community, stimulate economic activities and create a new pathway to social and infrastructural advancement.
The groundbreaking ceremony was therefore received with considerable enthusiasm and optimism. The people looked forward to the day when the proposed estate would become a functional residential community, providing decent accommodation and opening new economic opportunities.
Unfortunately, the prolonged absence of meaningful progress has created understandable anxiety among residents, who are now earnestly asking when the project will move beyond its initial ceremonial stage into actual construction and eventual delivery.
The prolonged delay in the commencement of the Renewed Hope Estate project is particularly troubling against the backdrop of Nigeria’s growing housing deficit.
Housing is not a luxury; it is a fundamental necessity and an indispensable component of human development. A decent home provides security, dignity, stability and an enabling environment for families to thrive.
For a rapidly developing community such as Ekpan, the importance of a functional housing scheme cannot be overemphasised.
The community’s strategic location within the Warri-Effurun economic corridor, coupled with its proximity to major commercial, industrial and business activities, makes the proposed estate particularly relevant to the housing needs of workers, professionals, civil servants, entrepreneurs and other residents seeking decent and accessible accommodation.
May l also stress that a properly developed Renewed Hope Estate in Ekpan would not only provide residential accommodation but could also stimulate employment opportunities for artisans, construction workers, engineers, suppliers, transport operators and other members of the local economy.
It would equally create opportunities for small businesses, increase commercial activities and contribute to the overall economic development of the surrounding communities .
More importantly, the project would demonstrate that the Renewed Hope initiative is capable of producing practical benefits beyond policy announcements and official ceremonies.
There is no better time than now for the Federal and Delta State Governments to revisit the project and establish a clear implementation pathway considering the 2027 general election which is already at hand.
First, the project will provide an opportunity to address part of the housing shortage confronting residents of Delta State, particularly within the Warri-Effurun metropolis, where the demand for decent and affordable accommodation remains a major concern.
Second, reviving the project would reinforce public confidence in the Renewed Hope initiative. When government makes a commitment to a community and subsequently delivers on that commitment, it strengthens the relationship between the people and those entrusted with public leadership.
Third, the commencement of construction would create direct and indirect employment opportunities, particularly for youths and skilled workers within Uvwie and neighbouring communities.
Fourth, the estate would add value to the physical development of Ekpan, attract further investments and potentially stimulate complementary infrastructure and commercial activities.
Finally, completing the project would demonstrate that the Oborevwori administration is not merely interested in initiating new projects but also committed to ensuring that important development initiatives inherited, facilitated or introduced during its tenure are not abandoned.
On behalf of the Ekpan community l am therefore appealing to Hon. Festus Keyamo, SAN, to use his position, influence and access to the relevant Federal Government authorities to draw renewed attention to the project and facilitate the necessary steps towards its commencement.
As a prominent member of the Federal Executive Council with strong political and developmental interests in Delta State, Oga Keyamo has an important opportunity to ensure that the housing initiative becomes a lasting legacy for the people of Ekpan who are his kith and kin.
Similarly, l urge Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to sustain the commitment already demonstrated by his administration through the provision of land and work with the relevant Federal Government agencies to remove any administrative, technical or implementation bottlenecks delaying the
The Renewed Hope Estate project in Ekpan.
Indeed the community would also appreciate a clear official update on the present status of the estate, the factors responsible for the prolonged delay and a realistic timeline for the commencement of construction.
Where necessary, a joint Federal-State project review committee could be established to examine the challenges, identify the outstanding requirements and develop a practical roadmap for implementation.
Such an intervention in my opinion would demonstrate that the project remains a priority and that the expectations of the host community have not been forgotten
in the pipeline.
The excitement which greeted the groundbreaking ceremony should not become a distant memory or another chapter in the catalogue of unfulfilled development expectations.
The people of Ekpan deserve to see the Renewed Hope Estate take physical shape. They deserve to witness construction activities, the development of the necessary infrastructure and, ultimately, the delivery of a functional residential estate.
It is important to emphasize that l am not approaching the Federal and Delta State Governments from a position of hostility or political confrontation. Rather, this is passionate appeal founded on appreciation, constructive engagement and a genuine desire to see a laudable government initiative succeed. I particularly sounding this way because I
was one of the journalist Who covered the groundbreaking ceremony.
The people recognise the efforts of Hon. Festus Keyamo in facilitating the project and Governor Oborevwori in providing the land. What they are asking for now is the next logical step: the actual commencement and completion of the project.
After all, the real value of a government project is not measured by the number of dignitaries who attend its groundbreaking ceremony but by the extent to which the project is eventually delivered and the lives it positively transforms.
As the Federal Government continues to promote its Renewed Hope agenda, for the 2027 general election, the Ekpan Renewed Hope Estate presents a very good opportunity to demonstrate that the initiative is not merely a political slogan but a practical commitment capable of changing lives.
For Governor Oborevwori, reviving the project would further strengthen his administration’s MORE Agenda of Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, Enhanced Peace and Security. The last time I visited the site l saw the road leading to the estate under construction that to me meant Sheriff is honoring his part of the agreement.
For Hon. Festus Keyamo, he need to ensure that the project moves from the current stalled stage to actual construction which would represent a significant developmental achievement and a lasting contribution to the people of his home state.
For the people of Ekpan, the commencement of the estate would mean more than buildings and residential accommodation. The Project represent renewed confidence, economic opportunities, improved living conditions and the fulfilment of an expectation that was enthusiastically embraced when the project was first announced.
On behalf of the community we therefore respectfully call on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Hon. Festus Keyamo, SAN, to give the Ekpan Renewed Hope Estate the urgent attention it deserves.
Let the groundbreaking ceremony be followed by groundbreaking development. Let the promise become a project, and let the project become a legacy.
The people of Ekpan have welcomed the Renewed Hope initiative. They have provided the land through the support of the state government and have demonstrated their willingness to embrace the project.
What they are asking for now is simple, reasonable and legitimate: Let construction work resume at the site. Let Renewed Hope become a reality in Ekpan. God bless Delta State.
