Examination Miracle centers in secondary schools, counter productive; – Kogi Board Chairman

The Executive Chairman of Kogi state Senior Secondary Education Board, (KGSSEB), Dr. Habiba Suleiman, has said that the existence of examination miracle centers in some secondary schools in the state, has negative consequences on the performances of the students, after their secondary education.

She however assured that the state government, through the board is working very hard to eliminate these examination miracle centers from secondary schools across the state, saying that there existence is counter-priductive

The chairman who disclosed this during a meeting with the principals of Secondary Schools in the state and members of the board, noted that the existence of these miracle centers was responsible for lack of seriousness among secondary school children in the state.

Speaking further she said “We took over the leadership of the Board in December last year and after going round, we discovered that there are a lot of laxity in our Senior secondary schools. We noted that the principals needed to be talked to. Students performance not impressing. So the essence of the meeting is to rob minds and tell them where they need to do better.

“We have also told them that it’s no longer business as usual, they need to do things differently. There should be decorum in what we do as leaders, who must show good example to both the teachers and students.

She however noted that the principals are monitored closely to ensure that no extra levy is imposed on the students, in line with the state government stance on free education for students of public secondary schools in the state.

“Why we are still putting more effort to checkmate the principals is the fact that, we believe that they are still charging money for this their so call miracle centers. Because we believe that that is the more reason children today are no longer serious with learning. When a teacher is teaching, they will just walk away because they believe that paying what they call help money to the so call miracle centers will help them to pass.

“This was largely responsible for the decadence in our educational system. You find a graduate today that cannot defend their certificate. Some graduates who goes NYSC, can’t even write their names correctly.

She noted that students in public schools have the capacity to excel with proper nurturing and mentorship, assuring that she is working hard with her team to bring back the old lost glory of secondary schools in the state.

According to her, the board will engage the principals and teachers in training and re-training, particularly on the use of modern technology tools and training in ICT.

“We are planning so many things for the principals and their teachers to boost there morals. We will start with the children by re-intriducing extra curricular activities, like jet clubs, debating societies among others, in our schools.

“For the principals, we are going to train and re-train them particularly about things that are in vogue now . She said

In their separate speeches, Hon Paul Jibril PM 1, -Hon Hussaini Ada Alhassan PM II, Hon Adambe Otaru PM I1I.and DR, Aisha Mohamed Atojoko Secretary in KGSSEB , all pledged their support for the success of all the Programmes of the Board

They advised the principals to take their duties seriously, saying that they have a great responsibility to their teachers and students.
