FALSE NARRATIVES THREATEN PEACE: BASSA REJECTS LINK TO DEKINA KILLINGS

By David Alfred-Dogwo
May 9, 2026

The attention of concerned stakeholders and residents of Bassa Local Government Area has been drawn to a publication authored by one Umar Sani, titled “The Hidden Conspiracy Behind the Killings…”, in which unfounded allegations were made linking Bassa communities with Fulani herdsmen in the violent incidents affecting parts of Dekina Local Government Area.

We wish to categorically state that Bassa people are not involved in any conspiracy or collaboration with criminal elements responsible for attacks in Dekina or any other part of Kogi State.

The allegations contained in the said publication are misleading, divisive, and capable of worsening already fragile inter-community relations. Such unverified claims only serve to inflame tensions between neighboring communities with long-standing historical and social ties.

Bassa and Igala communities have coexisted for years, and any attempt to create suspicion, hostility, or conflict between both groups should be discouraged in the interest of peace and security.

While the security challenges facing communities in Kogi East and surrounding areas remain a matter of serious concern, addressing them requires facts, collaboration with security agencies, and responsible leadership—not blame games or inflammatory narratives.

We therefore call on opinion leaders, media commentators, and community advocates to exercise restraint in their public communications and avoid statements capable of inciting misunderstanding or communal disharmony.

We also urge relevant authorities and stakeholders to investigate the root causes of recurring conflicts in affected areas and ensure that justice is served where necessary.

Bassa Local Government remains committed to peaceful coexistence, security, and the protection of lives and property.

Let it be clearly understood: Bassa should not be made a scapegoat for broader security challenges confronting the region.

Signed:
David Alfred-Dogwo
Speaker for the Voiceless
Bassa Local Government Area, Kogi State
