The Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reiterated its commitment to the January 31st, 2025, deadline for the recertification of titled land documents. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning, Hon. Abduljabbar Muhammad Umar, during a press conference held at the ministry yesterday.
The commissioner emphasized that the deadline remains sacrosanct, urging all landowners who have not yet recertified their documents to act promptly to secure their properties. He stated, “We urge all landowners to ensure their documents are recertified before the deadline to protect and secure their land-related properties. Failure to comply may lead to unpleasant consequences, as the ministry is determined to streamline and enhance land ownership processes across the state.”
Since the commencement of the recertification process, the ministry has recorded an overwhelming response. Over 1,000,000 distinct interactions have been documented, covering various processes such as conversions, name changes, and recertification applications. Hon. Abduljabbar Muhammad Umar expressed pride in the level of compliance so far and encouraged others to join the process to avoid last-minute rushes.
“We are proud to proclaim that over 2,000 Certificates of Occupancy (CofOs) have been recertified, and the number is steadily increasing,” he said. “We have also begun processing Systematic Land Title Registration documents to ensure regular CofOs are issued.”
In a significant development, the commissioner announced plans to introduce Sectional Titling in Kano State. This new initiative will facilitate the ownership of properties in housing estates, plazas, blocks of flats, and markets, simplifying the process for businesses and individuals. “This initiative will not only ease property ownership but also significantly boost the internally generated revenue of the state,” he added.
The commissioner expressed profound gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support and confidence in the ministry, which has enabled the successful implementation of these groundbreaking initiatives.
Governor’s Vision for Land Reforms
It will be recalled that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially launched the recertification program on November 25th, 2024. The initiative aims to modernize and streamline land administration in the state, ensuring transparency, security, and increased revenue generation.
As the January 31st deadline approaches, the Kano State Government urges all landowners to take advantage of this opportunity to regularize their land titles and avoid penalties. With new systems and policies in place, the state is poised to set a benchmark for efficient land management in Nigeria.
