Kogi MWAN conduct free eye screening to mark 2025 World Glaucoma Week

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Kogi State chapter, joined the global community in commemorating World Glaucoma Week 2025 by organizing a free eye screening program for female doctors in the state.

This initiative aimed to highlight the importance of self-care among healthcare professionals, recognizing that only by prioritizing their own well-being can they provide optimal care for their patients.

The event was chaired by the esteemed President of MWAN Kogi State, Dr. Yetunde Owa, who underscored the need for early detection and management of glaucoma—a leading cause of irreversible blindness.

Often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, typically due to increased intraocular pressure.

“Because it progresses gradually and may not show symptoms in its early stages, many individuals remain unaware of their condition until significant vision loss has occurred. However, with regular screenings, early diagnosis, and timely intervention, glaucoma can be managed effectively, reducing the risk of blindness” she added.

The screening was conducted by Dr. Yetunde Owa, Dr. Grace Agbo, and Dr. Joy Omiunu, all of whom played a crucial role in ensuring that female doctors received comprehensive eye examinations.

Dr. Owa encouraged all healthcare providers to be proactive about their eye health, emphasizing that regular check-ups and preventive measures are key to maintaining peak professional performance.

According to her “This initiative served as a call to action for female doctors to prioritize their own health while continuing their dedicated service to the community.

“MWAN Kogi State remains committed to advocating for the well-being of women in medicine and raising awareness about preventable diseases like glaucoma, ensuring a healthier future for all”.
