Kogi West Rises: Time to Reject Power-Hungry Politicians like Samuel Ladoke Akintola

The people of Kogi West are at a crossroads as the 2027 general elections approach, particularly with regards to the governorship, which has eluded the district since Nigeria’s formation in 1960.

It’s worth noting that an Ebira man, Alhaji Adamu Atta, became the first civilian Governor of the old Kwara State in 1979. Currently, an Ebira man, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has spent 8 years in power, followed by the incumbent, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, bringing the total to 16 years. Meanwhile, Kogi West remains marginalized.

For too long, the people of Kogi West have been held captive by a clique of power-hungry politicians who prioritize their personal interests over the welfare of the masses.

The emergence of individuals like Senator Smart Adeyemi, Chief Richard Asaje, Hon. Alfred Bello, has raised concerns, with their actions suggesting they may compromise principles to allow Kogi Central to continue dominating the state’s political landscape at the expense of their people.

The legacy of Samuel Ladoke Akintola serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked power and ambition. It’s time for the people of Kogi West to rise up and demand better leadership that provides equal opportunities for all.

The era of compromise and betrayal must end, and leaders who prioritize the people’s needs and work tirelessly to improve their lives should be the new norm.

However, it’s clear that no senatorial district in Kogi State can win a governorship election without the support of other senatorial districts, particularly given the 25% spread requirement in 14 out of 21 local government areas. With Kogi West, East, and Central having 7, 9, and 5 LGAs respectively, this presents an opportunity for Kogi West and East to collaborate and work towards achieving a more equitable power-sharing formula in the state.

The people of Kogi West have a choice to make: continue down the path of stagnation or demand a new kind of leadership that truly serves the people.

The future of the zone is in their hands. As the political season approaches, the people should be reminded of the importance of unity and vigilance.

There are concerns that outsiders may attempt to polarize the region for political gain, exploiting existing divisions and tensions.
