The Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA) has concluded a 6-day strategic tour of its Area and Project Offices, with a renewed commitment to agricultural development and food security in Nigeria.
The tour, which ended on June 3, 2025, took the management team to various project sites, including the Girinya irrigation scheme in Kogi State.
According to the Managing Director, Girinya irrigation scheme is a multi-million dollar agricultural investment that produces over 500 tonnes of paddy rice, supporting Nigeria’s rice milling industry. The scheme has the potential to double its output with adequate funding and support.
During the tour, the Managing Director/CEO of LNRBDA, Engr. Olumoroti George Olusola, met with the Ohinoyi of Girinya and apologized for any wrongdoing that may have caused a rift between the Authority and the community.
He assured the monarch that steps would be taken to rebuild the goodwill and address the community’s concerns.
The farmers under the Water Users Association (WUA) requested immediate intervention for the complete rehabilitation and commissioning of the installed irrigation system, provision of solar pumps, and farm inputs.
The MD reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing food insecurity through sustainable agricultural development and assured the farmers that the Authority would continue to provide infrastructure and technical support.
The tour provided the Executive Management team with a valuable opportunity to assess existing facilities, interact with stakeholders, and communicate the renewed vision of the Authority.
The MD urged field officers to remain dedicated, build their technical capacity, and support the transition from subsistence to mechanized farming.
The tour concluded with the commissioning of solar pumps and other farm implements at the Egbeda-Egga dam site.
The MD expressed appreciation to the field officers for their hard work and charged them to pursue improved service delivery and enhanced productivity in line with national goals.
The LNRBDA management team has promised to escalate the need to complete the installation and commissioning of the irrigation facilities in the scheme to the supervising ministry for urgent attention. The Authority is committed to maximizing the utilization of available assets and resources through public-private partnerships.
