Open Letter to Mr President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Minister of Justice

Dear Mr. President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Minister of Justice,

I am writing to bring to your esteemed attention a matter of great significance concerning the conduct of local government elections in our nation. It has become increasingly evident that the current practice of state governors overseeing these elections has led to various challenges and perceptions of partiality, which undermine the principles of democracy and good governance.

Local government elections are fundamental to our democratic process, providing a platform for grassroots participation and ensuring that local leaders are truly representative of their communities. However, when these elections are conducted under the supervision of state governors, the potential for undue influence and lack of fairness is a pressing concern. Such a situation can erode public trust and compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

To address this critical issue, I propose that the responsibility for conducting local government elections be transferred to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Granting INEC this responsibility would ensure full autonomy and independence in the electoral process. INEC has the experience, capacity, and legal framework to conduct free, fair, and credible elections across the country. By extending its mandate to include local government elections, we can enhance transparency and accountability at all levels of government.

This change would not only align with our commitment to democratic principles but also strengthen the bond of trust between the government and the governed. It would empower citizens to choose their local leaders without fear of manipulation or undue influence, fostering a more inclusive and participatory political landscape.

In conclusion, I urge you, as the leaders of our great nation, to consider this proposal with the seriousness it deserves. By transferring the conduct of local government elections to INEC, we can take a significant step towards consolidating our democracy and ensuring that every vote truly counts.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that you will take the necessary actions to uphold the democratic values we all hold dear.

Sincerely,

Hon. Bala Salihu Dawakin kudu .
