Parliamentary System of Government is the best for Nigeria – Hon. Salman
The member representing Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon. Idris Salman has reiterated the commitment of the 10th Assembly to give Nigerians the best legislation that will move the country forward, stressing that the Parliamentary system of government will be the best to reduce cost of governance and also for the government to be responsive to the people.
He disclosed this in a chat with our correspondent at the National Assembly, stressing that the current situation in the country calls for all hands to be on the deck in order to tackle the social menaces.
According to him, the bill of migrating the country from the current presidential system of government to the Parliamentary is already before the 10th National Assembly and it has passed through second reading and sent to the committee who will convene a public hearing to get the views of Nigerians.
He pointed out that he is one of the lawmakers that is pushing for a better Nigeria through the bill.
He noted that Parliamentary system of government would be better for the country to reduce cost and also to make the government to be more responsive, stressing that in the proposed bill, the House of Representatives will produce the Prime Minister among themselves while the president will be produced by the Senate, and Ministers will also be among members of the Parliament who at any moment the people pass vote of no confidence on them, will lose their seat and government.
“The Parliamentary system will be better than the Presidential system where Ministers are not answerable to the people, some of the appointees in the presidential system behave anyhow because they know they have the support of the President, so I believe, that kind of issues will be addressed in the proposed parliamentary system for Nigerians to own their government accountable” he said
While on State Police, he said despite people raising concerns on how the state police should be structured especially the way Governors behave in Nigeria, that since the constitution amendment is underway, it provide the opportunity for the National Assembly to amendment some sections to give the power of appointing the commissioner of police in the State Assembly not the Governor.
He stressed that it becomes seamless when the Parliamentary system comes on board where the Governor of the states will be among the State House of Assembly members, same will be applicable at the local government levels where the chairman will be among the councilors, hence the fear of misusing the state police would be taken care of while every segment of the government at all levels will be responsive since they are the representatives of the people that can lose their seats and government any moment the people lose confidence in their leadership.
He acknowledged the fact that winning the election is a different ball game when you enter the national assembly where issues that bother on national interest are being discussed and says despite his representing Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency interest he also has an obligation to the entire country.
He said with eight months in the House, he has been able to reach out to his constituents in different ways and gave scholarships to 39 students at the College of Agriculture, Ahmadu Bello University, Kabba campus as part of his contributions to make the college viable in the area, facilitate employments to some of the youths, both in federal and state government agencies aside other relief materials he got from National Emergency Management Agency to the people whose properties or means of livelihood were affected due to natural disaster.
He said the current situation in the country calls for more sincerity of purpose as both the government and people need to work together for better days ahead.
He pointed out that the government should let the people see that there will be hope at the end of the suffering, then they can be able to understand and see reasons why they have to go through what they are going through, stressing that it is only when people are alive to enjoy whatever.
He said for now he is not contemplating leaving his party Africa Democratic Congress (ADC), that the mandate given to him by the people is between 2023 and 2027 hence it is only God that knows whatever tomorrow holds.
He stressed further that he is a product of community decision, hence the people will be at the center of whatever actions he intends to take politically going forward.
He said as usual the people should expect more qualitative representations at the national level, as his business is to be their voice that will be heard loud and clear to cater for their yearnings and aspirations to have a better life and society.
