PLASU LECTURERS TO COMMENCE INDEFINITE STRIKE ON AUGUST 25
By Peter Azi – JOS,
Academic activities at Plateau State University, Bokkos, PLASU, may be disrupted as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, PLASU Chapter, is set to commence a total and indefinite strike on Monday, August 25, 2026.
This was disclosed by the Branch Chairman, Dr. Vincent Choji, in a statement made available to our correspondent in Jos on Thursday.
According to Dr. Choji, the strike notice follows the approval granted by the National Executive Council of ASUU, NEC-ASUU, at its meeting held over the weekend.
NEC considered the branch’s request to embark on industrial action over unresolved issues contained in its Charter of Demands. The demands include:
1. Commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme
2. Implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement and payment of arrears with effect from January 2026
3. Provision of safe and secure staff quarters
4. Construction of trenches around the perimeter fence
5. Cessation of the intimidation of union leaders, as contained in a letter to Congress dated 18th May, 2026, through the Registrar
6. Payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25%/35% wage award
The statement added that NEC also considered the report of the Visitation Team that met with the University Administration and the Visitor to the University on Monday, 27th July, 2026.
“Having assessed the responses of both the University Administration and the Plateau State Government, NEC observed that nothing tangible has been done to address the Branch’s Charter of Demands,” the statement read.
Consequently, NEC granted the branch’s request to proceed on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action upon the expiration of a two-week ultimatum, which commenced on Monday, 10th August, 2026 and ends on Monday, 24th August, 2026.
Dr. Choji warned that if urgent steps are not taken to address the issues, students will be seriously affected.
He noted that students are scheduled to resume on August 27, while lectures are to commence on September 9, 2026, according to the university’s academic calendar.
_“Please find attached our correspondence to you on this matter,”_ the statement concluded.
