The Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, effective January 2, 2026, as part of renewed efforts to address rising security challenges across the country.
The announcement, contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, followed a comprehensive review of emerging crime trends and the role of unregulated vehicle modifications in facilitating criminal activities. According to the police, the decision is aimed at closing security gaps that have increasingly been exploited by criminals.
CSP Hundeyin clarified that contrary to widespread public speculation, there is no court order restraining the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the law regulating the use of tinted vehicle glasses. He explained that enforcement was temporarily suspended in the past to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and adapt to the digital permit application process introduced by the Force.
“Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the statement read. “Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes.”
Security experts have long raised concerns that heavily tinted vehicles make it difficult for law enforcement officers to identify occupants during routine checks or emergency situations. In several high-profile cases across the country, suspects were reported to have used such vehicles to evade surveillance and escape crime scenes, further underscoring the urgency of stricter enforcement.
The police noted that the renewed enforcement is not intended to harass law-abiding citizens but to proactively safeguard lives and property. Motorists whose vehicles require tinted glass for medical, security, or official reasons have been advised to obtain valid Tinted Glass Permits through approved police channels, including the online application platform, which is designed to ensure transparency and reduce human interference.
Reassuring Nigerians, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, emphasised that the enforcement exercise will be carried out professionally and with full respect for citizens’ rights. He warned officers against abuse of authority, stressing that erring personnel will be sanctioned in accordance with police regulations.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to promoting public safety and upholding the rule of law,” the IGP said. “We will continue to work collaboratively with all stakeholders, including motorists, transport unions, civil society groups, and the media, to ensure that this policy is implemented fairly and effectively in the interest of national security.”
Members of the public have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement officers and to report any cases of misconduct during the enforcement exercise. As the January 2, 2026 commencement date approaches, the police say intensified public awareness campaigns will be rolled out nationwide to educate motorists on the requirements and benefits of compliance.
With the renewed enforcement, authorities hope to strike a balance between individual convenience and collective security, reinforcing the message that safety on Nigeria’s roads remains a shared responsibility.
