Birnin Kebbi — The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed an early morning explosion at the General Hospital in Bagudo, Bagudo Local Government Area, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting an immediate security response.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to the police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, when residents around the hospital area reported hearing a loud explosion. Security agencies were immediately alerted, leading to the swift deployment of a joint security team comprising police officers, military personnel, and local vigilantes.
“We want to assure all residents of the area that the security situation is fully under control following a loud explosion at the General Hospital, Bagudo, in the early hours of Tuesday, Dec. 30,” Usman said.
He explained that the affected area was promptly cordoned off to prevent unauthorized access and ensure the safety of residents and hospital staff. Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) units were also deployed to the scene to conduct a detailed technical assessment and rule out any further threats.
In a significant relief to the public, the police confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
“We are grateful to confirm that there are no casualties. Although a building within the hospital’s staff quarters sustained damage, the occupants had earlier evacuated the premises and were therefore safe,” Usman added.
The General Hospital, Bagudo, is a major public health facility serving not only Bagudo town but also surrounding rural communities. Following the incident, hospital activities were temporarily scaled down in the affected area as a precaution, while emergency services continued to function under enhanced security.
The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, according to the statement, has ordered additional tactical deployments to the area to maintain public order and reassure residents.
“The Commissioner of Police has reinforced security in and around the hospital and neighboring communities to prevent any breakdown of law and order,” Usman said.
He further disclosed that a comprehensive investigation had commenced to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the explosion.
“We urge members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by avoiding the immediate vicinity of the incident to allow unhindered security and investigative operations. Further updates will be communicated as investigations progress,” the spokesman stated.
Residents of Bagudo, while expressing concern over the incident, commended the prompt response of security agencies and called for sustained vigilance to safeguard public facilities across the state.
The police assured the public of their commitment to protecting lives and property and reiterated that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.
