A fresh wave of political tension is unfolding in Kano State, as the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched an investigation into several local government chairmen in the southern part of the state.
The move comes amid allegations of disloyalty and attempts to destabilize the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The state APC leadership, under Haruna Doguwa, announced the formation of a special investigative committee tasked with examining claims that some local government leaders—popularly referred to as “chairmen”—are engaging in activities deemed harmful to the current administration.
These allegations include inciting internal party conflict and orchestrating political unrest.
At the heart of the controversy is an alleged push by some of these chairmen to rally support for Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, a member of the House of Representatives representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure federal constituency. Reports suggest that they are encouraging him to contest for a Senate seat currently associated with Kawu Sumaila.
Party insiders interpret this move as a direct challenge to the existing political order, raising concerns about factionalism and betrayal within party ranks.
Further allegations point to a lack of support among some chairmen for the policies and leadership of Governor Yusuf. Critics argue that such attitudes could undermine governance and hinder developmental efforts in the state. The situation has sparked fears of a broader internal crisis that could weaken party unity ahead of future elections.
The investigative committee has been mandated to summon the accused chairmen and provide them an opportunity to respond to the allegations. According to party officials, the process aims to ensure fairness while safeguarding party discipline. Should the accusations be substantiated, the APC has indicated that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken.
Political analysts note that internal party disputes are not uncommon in Nigeria’s dynamic political landscape, particularly in states with strong party competition like Kano. However, the current situation underscores deeper tensions that may stem from power struggles, personal ambitions, and ideological differences within party structures.
Observers also warn that prolonged infighting could have significant consequences, not only for the APC but also for governance in Kano State. A divided political front may slow policy implementation, disrupt public services, and erode public confidence in leadership.
As the investigation unfolds, residents and stakeholders alike are watching closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes stability, accountability, and the collective interests of Kano State.
