Politics of Interest: When Principles Bend and Power Speaks
***In the arena of power, loyalty shifts, truth is tested, and only those with vision can rise above the game

Now I finally believe that politics is a game of interest. This realization did not come overnight; it grew from observing patterns, contradictions, and the often puzzling behavior of political actors and supporters alike. What once seemed like ideology, loyalty, or principle now appears, in many cases, to be carefully calculated moves driven by personal, group, or strategic interests.
In today’s political landscape, one cannot help but notice the irony that defines it. People within the same political parties passionately support the continuity of one candidate, yet vehemently oppose another seeking the same privilege. The inconsistency is striking. It raises questions: Is it about competence, fairness, or simply convenience? The answer, more often than not, leans toward interest.
Even more amusing—and at times troubling—is the selective application of principles. The same individuals who advocate for rotational agreements in the name of equity, justice, and fairness can quickly abandon those ideals when it no longer suits their agenda. They argue for zoning today and campaign for tenure elongation tomorrow. They preach democracy but practice preference. Such contradictions expose a deeper truth: principles in politics are sometimes flexible, but interests are often fixed.
The issue of marginalisation further highlights this reality. Many communities and regions have experienced neglect and exclusion for years. Yet, paradoxically, some of these same groups continue to support those who have historically sidelined them. Why? Because, at that moment, their interests—whether immediate benefits, promises, or affiliations—are being served. It is a painful but honest reflection of how powerful interest can be in shaping decisions, even against one’s long-term welfare.
This brings us to a hard truth: if you are not ready to navigate the complexities—and sometimes the harsh realities—of political engagement, you may find it difficult to thrive within it. Politics is not always clean, and it is not always fair. However, acknowledging this should not lead to despair or moral compromise. Instead, it should inspire awareness, strategy, and a stronger commitment to doing what is right despite the odds.
Amidst all these dynamics, there are still glimmers of hope. Some elected officials are performing admirably, delivering results, and earning the trust of the people. Naturally, one may feel inclined to support their continuity. However, we must not forget that there are many aspiring leaders with fresh ideas, innovative solutions, and a genuine desire to serve. If they are never given the opportunity, how can their potential ever be realized?
History has shown us that many of today’s outstanding leaders were once given a chance when no one knew what they were capable of. Opportunity is the bridge between potential and performance. Denying others that bridge limits not just individuals, but the progress of society as a whole.
Therefore, while it is true that interest plays a significant role in politics, it should not be the only factor that guides our decisions. There must be a higher sense of responsibility—a commitment to future generations. Do not make choices today that will leave your children questioning your silence or your actions tomorrow. Let your legacy be one of courage, integrity, and positive contribution.
For those in leadership positions, humility is essential. When direction is lost, wisdom lies in seeking guidance. There is no shame in asking for advice; in fact, it is a mark of strength, not weakness.
Leadership is not about knowing everything, but about making the right decisions, even if it means listening, learning, and adjusting.
In the end, politics may indeed be a game of interest—but it is also a platform for impact.
Choose to play your part with conscience, with vision, and with a sense of duty that goes beyond self.
