Pressures Mount on former President Jonathan to Shelve 2027 Presidential Bid
Former President Goodluck Jonathan is facing increasing pressure to abandon his planned presidential bid in the 2027 general elections.
A group of prominent Niger Delta citizens, led by Government Tompolo, is urging Jonathan to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election instead.
Tompolo recently visited Jonathan in his hometown of Otuoke, Bayelsa State, and reportedly advised him to shelve his presidential ambition. Tompolo cited the lack of support from Jonathan’s kinsmen in the Niger Delta and the popularity of President Tinubu as reasons for Jonathan to back Tinubu’s second term bid.
Sources close to the meeting revealed that Tompolo encouraged Jonathan to join a consensus front in the Niger Delta for the continuity of southern presidency with Tinubu as beneficiary till 2031. Jonathan reportedly promised to consider Tompolo’s advice.
The meeting was seen as a significant development, given Tompolo’s influence in the Niger Delta and his role as convener of the “PBAT- Door-2-Door” grassroots political movement supporting Tinubu’s re-election.
