Abuja, Nigeria – The Senate has denied allegations made by one Alwan Hassan, who claimed that money was demanded from Abdullahi Garba Ramat before his appointment could be confirmed. Alwan alleged that the request for money was connected to the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, and presented what he called “evidence” to support his claims.
In response to these accusations, the official spokesperson of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, dismissed Alwan Hassan’s statements as false and misleading. He clarified the reasons behind the delay in confirming Ramat’s appointment, emphasizing that the Senate’s decision was based on petitions and allegations submitted by concerned citizens and independent individuals.
“There were petitions and complaints from members of the public regarding Ramat’s nomination. Whenever such issues are raised, it is the duty of the Senate to pause the confirmation process and investigate thoroughly. We urge Nigerians not to be distracted by these unfounded allegations of bribery.”
He further accused Alwan Hassan of deliberately attempting to mislead the public by using Ramat’s situation to tarnish the image of the Senate and its leadership.
“The Senate is aware of a calculated attempt by one Alwan Hassan, who, using Ramat’s name, is spreading falsehoods to misinform Nigerians. His actions are purely politically motivated and aimed at discrediting the legislative process,” Adaramodu added.
He reaffirmed that the Senate has received multiple formal petitions and concerns regarding Ramat from various quarters, which is why the confirmation process was suspended pending investigation.
“The Senate will not be dragged into baseless allegations simply to alter due process,” he said. “Nigerians deserve qualified and transparent public officers whose appointments are confirmed after thorough scrutiny—not through lies and blackmail.”
Senator Adaramodu also disclosed that the Senate intends to take legal action against Alwan Hassan to compel him to produce the so-called evidence behind his claims.
“The Senate will take Alwan Hassan to court so that he can present whatever evidence he claims to have before Nigerians,” he stated.
In conclusion, Adaramodu appealed to the public to remain calm and assured Nigerians that the truth will prevail.
“We urge our supporters and the public to remain patient and not to be swayed by fabricated political propaganda. Insha Allah, the truth will soon come to light,” he said.
