In a significant move aimed at strengthening grassroots sports development and youth engagement in Kano, the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, has donated three brand-new buses to key sports bodies in the state.

The beneficiaries of this gesture include the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), the Kano State Football Referees Council, and the Nationwide League One. The donation underscores the Senator’s continued commitment to empowering youth through sports and improving the operational capacity of organizations that play pivotal roles in talent discovery and sports administration.

The announcement was made at the chamber of the Nigerian Senate during a courtesy visit by representatives of the benefiting associations. The event, though brief, carried significant weight as it highlighted the growing recognition of sports as a tool for social development and economic empowerment in northern Nigeria.

According to official sources, the buses will be formally handed over this Saturday by the Senator’s Special Adviser on Youth and Sports Development, Comrade Kabiru Ado Lakwaya, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Kano State. The symbolic presentation of keys is expected to draw stakeholders from across the sports community, marking yet another milestone in the state’s sporting journey.
Speaking on behalf of SWAN, the Kano State Chairman, Zahradeen Saleh Yakubu, described the donation as “transformational,” noting that transportation has long been a major challenge for sports journalists covering events across the state’s 44 local government areas. He added that the bus would significantly improve mobility, enabling timely and comprehensive coverage of grassroots competitions and fostering greater visibility for emerging talents.
In a similar vein, Alhaji Aminu Baba, Chairman of the NLO Kano Forum, praised Senator Barau’s foresight and dedication to sports development. He emphasized that logistical support such as this is crucial for sustaining league activities at the grassroots level, where many young players begin their journey to professional football. He further urged stakeholders to build on this momentum by investing more in training facilities and youth programs.

Also reacting, the Chairman of the Kano State Football Referees Council, Alhaji Auwalu Ali, expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, noting that improved transportation would enhance referees’ ability to officiate matches across the state efficiently. He assured that the council would utilize the bus judiciously to improve officiating standards and contribute to fair play in local competitions.

Sports analysts have described the initiative as timely, particularly at a period when youth unemployment remains a pressing concern. By investing in sports infrastructure and support systems, leaders like Senator Barau are not only promoting physical activity but also opening pathways for careers in athletics, coaching, officiating, and sports journalism.

Observers believe that such interventions could have a ripple effect, inspiring other public office holders and private sector stakeholders to contribute to the development of sports in Nigeria. With Kano’s rich history in football and athletics, enhanced support could reposition the state as a hub for nurturing future national and international stars.

As anticipation builds ahead of the official handover ceremony, many within the sports community see this development as more than just a donation—it is a strategic investment in the future of youth, unity, and excellence in Nigerian sports.
