Silence of the Opposition: Kogi State’s Politics and the Voice of Otunba Olayinka Braimoh

I have been observing Kogi State politics since the assumption of office of the current governor , and something strikes my mind. Where is the opposition? Where are the dissenting voices, where are the constructive criticisms on the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, particularly regarding the alarming insecurity gripping the state? It is a deafening silence, broken only by the powerful voice of Olayinka Braimoh, the 2023, Kogi governorship candidate. His actions are a stark contrast to the silence from other opposition figures. He is actively holding the government accountable, demanding answers, and pushing for real change. This is a vital role in a functioning democracy, a role many others seem to be neglecting.

Braimoh, a notable personality that actively engaged with the people, traversed the length and breadth of Kogi State, during the 2023 governorship electioneering campaign.

Although he was not announced winner of the 2023 gubernatorial election, as a dark shadow was casted over the process, but his commitment to Kogi State remains unwavering. His active presence on the ground, combined with his clear policy proposals, positions him as a force to be reckoned with in future elections.

His persistent engagement is a symbol of opposition that actually cares about the people’s concerns instead of focusing solely on power acquisition.

The battling of serious insecurity in some community like Bunu, Yagba and other axes serves as a microcosm of the larger problem facing Kogi State. They are not just an abstract political issues, they are deeply felt crises affecting people’s daily lives, their safety, and livelihoods. These are crises demanding urgent and effective solutions.
Should these not be a top priority for all political actors in the State?

One wonders why other opposition have remained largely silent on these urgent issues. Are they afraid of repercussions? Are they lacking the courage to challenge the status quo? Or is it simply a lack of genuine concern for the well being of Kogi people?

The opposition should provide constructive criticism, hold the ruling party accountable, and offer alternative policies to address these challenges. A robust democracy thrives on healthy debate and constructive criticism. When opposition parties fail to fulfill their role as watchdogs, the ruling party operates unchecked, potentially leading to negligence and lack of accountability.

Media need to do more in its vital role of bringing attention to issues, amplifying the voices of those demanding change, and holding the government accountable.

Citizens should also demand accountability from their elected officials, actively participate in the political process, and support individuals working to improve challenges in the State.

Let’s break this silence, demand accountability from our leaders, support those who are bravely speaking out. The future of Kogi State, particularly the safety and security of its citizens, depends on it. The quiet complicity of the majority only strengthens the hand of inaction. God bless Olayinka Braimoh.
