Strike: Kogi workers comply with NLC directive

Workers in Kogi State on Tuesday adhered to the nationwide indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

It was observed that most offices in Lokoja and other part of the state where under lock and key.

When our correspondent visited the State Secretariat in Lokoja, it was observed that some workers who came to the office left early because of the news that NLC and TUC have declared an indefinite nationwide strike over the untold hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government and the alleged maltreatment of NLC President Joe Ajaero, in Imo State.

The Kogi State Chairman of the TUC, Comrade Tijani Ahmed Sule said the Federal Government is being unfair to workers of Nigeria in view of the hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal.

Sule, who noted that there is no going back on the strike action until the unions’ demands are met, emphasized that there is need for the government to urgently take steps to cushion the hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal.

” It is a national directive for all workers to embark on an indefinite strike in compliance with what happened to NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo State, and the subsequent demands of workers due to the fuel subsidy removal across 36 states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory.

“It is important to note that some states are yet to implement or even call the leadership of various unions to pay the N35,000 wage award. This is unfortunate and disheartening, looking at the current hardship and unfounded situation we have found ourselves in Nigeria with the dwindling economic situation of the country.

“In compliance with what happened to NLC President, and wicked treatment meted on workers and Nigerians in general, all in the name of subsidy removal, it is the reason we are on strike because the government in power is taking us for granted despite the hardship we are all facing due to the fuel subsidy removal. NLC and TUC just went out for monitoring and workers are now aware that there is an indefinite strike which they have all complied with,” he said.
