THE POLITICAL FUTURE OF YAGBA FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY: A REFLECTION ON ELDER LEKE ABEJIDE’S THIRD TERM DECISION

As the 2027 general elections approach, the political atmosphere in Yagba Federal Constituency has once again become a focal point for analysis and reflection. One name that continues to resonate across the length and breadth of the constituency is that of Elder Leke Abejide, whose service and contributions have redefined representation in our region.

While rumors swirl about his intention not to seek a third term, it is vital to objectively assess the disadvantages of his possible exit and the advantages of his continuation in office.

DISADVANTAGES IF ELDER LEKE ABEJIDE DOES NOT CONTEST FOR A THIRD TERM

1. Loss of Legislative Experience and National Influence
Elder Abejide has, over two terms, acquired valuable experience and strategic influence within the National Assembly. His withdrawal would mean a loss of the voice and clout Yagba has painstakingly built in Abuja.

2. Disruption of Ongoing Development Projects
From road construction to hospital upgrades and educational interventions (such as payment of WAEC/NECO fees), many of his projects are mid-stream. A change in leadership risks derailing or slowing their completion.

3. Vacuum in Transparent and People-Oriented Leadership
The Elder’s leadership style has been transparent, inclusive, and development-focused. His absence could open the door for self-serving politics to return, which may set the constituency back.

4. Weakening of Constituency Unity and Leverage
Elder Abejide has been a unifying figure, bridging divides across party, ethnic, and community lines. Without his continued presence, our cohesion and leverage could diminish.

ADVANTAGES IF ELDER LEKE ABEJIDE CONTESTS FOR THIRD TERM

1. Sustained Developmental Momentum
A third term would allow Elder Abejide to consolidate and expand on the numerous infrastructural and social projects he has already initiated and it ensured Yagba remains on the path of progress.

2. Deeper Legislative Impact
With seniority comes greater committee influence and policymaking power. His continued presence would mean stronger advocacy and access to federal resources for the constituency.

3. Capacity to Mentor New Political Leaders
His third term would provide a platform for grooming credible, young leaders who can eventually continue his legacy under guided mentorship, this will set a good path and create rooms for favourable leadership continuity beyond 2027.

4. Political Stability and Confidence in Governance
The consistency of leadership under Elder Abejide has brought about confidence in governance. A third term guarantees political stability and sustained engagement with stakeholders.

In conclusion, while leadership renewal is healthy for any democracy, there are exceptional times when continuity becomes a necessity and this is one of those times. The decision Elder Leke Abejide makes will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of Yagba Federal Constituency for years to come.

Let us speak truth to history and encourage leadership that delivers. Elder Abejide’s third term is not about politics, it is about purpose, progress, and people.

Hon. Dr. Ashiru Abdulganiyu Segun
