We are Adopting Preventive Strategy to Tackle Insecurity – Kogi Govt
The Kogi State Government says it is adopting a preventive strategy to tackle the resurgence of insecurity in parts of the State.
State Security Adviser, Retired Commander Jerry Omodara, disclosed this while speaking on this week’s edition of “State of Kogi,” a Radio Kogi audience participatory programme.
He explained that a preventive strategy in security parlance is a proactive approach designed to eliminate risks, mitigate vulnerabilities, and block unauthorized access or threats before they can cause harm.
According to him, the approach is being implemented through strategic deployment of security personnel, including the Kogi Vigilante Service and Local Hunters, to flashpoints across the State.
“As part of moves to complement ongoing efforts of government and security agencies in nipping crimes in the bud, about five hundred forest guards are billed to commence training in the State,” Commander Omodara said. “The forest guards will be provided with sophisticated weapons to guard the forests from being used for criminal activities.”
On state policing, the Security Adviser said Kogi has been using neighbourhood watch to fight crimes and criminality. He urged the National Assembly to expedite action on providing the legal framework for state policing, noting that Kogi is the second state to submit a Memorandum of Understanding to the Federal Government.
Speaking on the recent attack on Ikoyi Community in Ijumu Local Government Area, he noted that the attack was foiled and security agents have been mandated to go after the assailants.
Commander Omodara also cautioned residents against flouting the government directive banning public gatherings beyond 4 PM. He reiterated the State Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, and urged citizens to assist security agencies with credible information.
During the radio programme, a caller, Mohammed from Bassa LGA, appealed for the reinstatement of sacked officers of the Vigilante Service, while Mr. Anyimode from Lokoja commended security agencies for their work and urged them to do more.
