A TRIBUTE TO A DISTINGUISHED LEADER, STATESMAN AND FATHER OF OUR TIME
IN HONOUR OF ALHAJI DR. IBRAHIM IDRIS, CON, FORMER EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF KOGI STATE
By Prince Ben S. Ikani, Esq.
Former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kogi State.
Yesterday, 29 October 2026, marked the 40th-day prayer for the repose of the soul of our departed leader, mentor and former Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Idris, in accordance with Islamic religious tradition.
As I reflect on his life, leadership and enduring legacy, I am deeply moved by a profound sense of gratitude, admiration and personal loss.
Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Idris was not merely a former governor; he was a leader whose confidence in people, appreciation of professional competence and respect for established institutions left a lasting impression on all those privileged to serve under his administration.
I remain particularly grateful for the confidence he reposed in me when he appointed me Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Kogi State. That appointment was more than an official responsibility; it was a demonstration of trust and an opportunity to serve my state at the highest level of its justice administration.
Having had the privilege of serving in that capacity, I can testify to his belief in the importance of the rule of law and the place of law in governance. He understood that government must operate within the framework of established laws and that the administration of justice must command respect, independence and public confidence.
His leadership provided me with the opportunity to contribute to the development of the legal and justice institutions of Kogi State. I shall always cherish the confidence he placed in me and the privilege of being part of his administration.
Leadership is ultimately measured not only by the offices occupied or the projects executed, but also by the lives touched, the values upheld and the institutions strengthened. In these respects, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Idris has left memories and lessons that will continue to resonate with those who knew him and served under his leadership.
His transition, reportedly after receiving medical attention at a hospital in the United Kingdom, reminds us of the transient nature of human existence and the inevitability of returning to our Creator. His 40th-day prayer is therefore not merely a religious observance; it is also an occasion for reflection, remembrance, gratitude and supplication for the peaceful repose of his soul.
As one whose professional journey was significantly influenced by his confidence and leadership, I shall forever remain grateful for the opportunity he gave me to serve Kogi State.
May Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, illuminate his grave, grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and give his family, friends, associates and the people of Kogi State the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Idris, you served your state, inspired many, and left footprints in the sands of our collective history.
May your soul rest in perfect peace.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
Prince Ben S. Ikani, Esq.
Former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kogi State.
