Alhaji Sule Lamido: Presidency Sets the Record Straight on President Tinubu’s June 12 Role
The Presidency has responded to claims made by former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, regarding President Bola Tinubu’s role in the June 12 struggle.
In a press statement signed by Mr Bayo Onanuga the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy in the presidency and posted on his social media handles.
According to him, Lamido alleged that Tinubu supported the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was won by Chief MKO Abiola.
The Presidency described Lamido’s claims as “false” and “revisionist,” stating that Tinubu was a key figure in the agitation against the June 12 annulment.
He noted that on August 19, 1993, Tinubu condemned the annulment on the Senate floor, describing it as “another coup d’état” and urging Nigerians to reject injustice and lawlessness.
The Presidency highlighted Tinubu’s significant role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which was formed to pressure the military government to step down in favor of Abiola.
The Presidency accused Lamido and other Social Democratic Party leaders of failing to oppose the military’s injustice and instead surrendering the people’s mandate without resistance.
The Presidency emphasized that Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, never mobilized market women to support the annulment, contrary to Lamido’s claims.
Instead, Tinubu was a steadfast advocate for democracy, while Lamido and others capitulated in the face of military oppression and intimidation.
The Presidency’s response aims to set the record straight on President Tinubu’s role in the June 12 struggle, highlighting his contributions to the pro-democracy movement and refuting Lamido’s claims as baseless and revisionist.
