The Kebbi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the suspension of its State Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Kana-Zuru, and the APC Chairman of Zuru Local Government Area, Hon. Aliyu Abubakar Abiola, over alleged violations of party rules and internal procedures.
The decision was contained in a statement signed by the APC State Secretary, Alhaji Sa’idu Muhammad Kimba, and made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi. According to the statement, the suspensions followed a series of complaints submitted by stakeholders from the Zuru Emirate concerning the conduct of the two party officials.
The party explained that the complaints alleged that the suspended officials demonstrated a lukewarm attitude toward party activities, failed to adequately engage critical stakeholders, neglected grassroots mobilization, and did not comply with established party principles and procedures.
Following what the party described as a thorough internal review and investigation, the APC leadership resolved to take disciplinary action.
As part of the decision, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Kana-Zuru was suspended as the APC State Chairman, with the Deputy State Chairman directed to assume the position in an acting capacity pending further directives from the party leadership.
Hon. Aliyu Abubakar Abiola was also suspended from his position as APC Chairman of Zuru Local Government Area with immediate effect.
Beyond the official reasons contained in the party’s statement, political observers within Kebbi State believe the suspensions are connected to the prolonged internal crisis that has affected the APC in Kebbi South.
Several party members interviewed by Democracy Newsline Newspaper alleged that the suspended officials were among individuals accused by some stakeholders of contributing to the political misunderstanding between Kebbi State Governor His Excellency Dr. Nasiru Idris (Kauran Gwandu) and Distinguished Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, the Senator representing Kebbi South.
According to these sources, the disagreement weakened party unity within the Zuru Emirate and created divisions among APC supporters in the area. These claims, however, remain allegations expressed by party members and have not been officially confirmed by the suspended officials.
During an independent investigation conducted across Kebbi South, Democracy Newsline Newspaper spoke with a prominent political figure who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.
The source alleged that during one political meeting attended by Hon. Aliyu Abubakar Abiola, participants were encouraged to oppose Senator Garba Musa Maidoki politically.
According to the source, it was suggested that such opposition could eventually lead to a change in the political leadership of Kebbi State and increase pressure against Governor Nasiru Idris.
The newspaper has not independently verified these allegations, and the suspended officials had not publicly responded to the claims at the time of filing this report.
Suspension of Commissioner
In a related development, the Kebbi State Government also suspended the Commissioner for Livestock Development and Fisheries, Alhaji Kabir Usman Alaramma Zuru.
A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, announced that the suspension took immediate effect and would remain in force until further notice.
The statement directed the commissioner to hand over all government property and official responsibilities under his custody to the Permanent Secretary of the ministry pending further government action.
Political sources who spoke with Democracy Newsline Newspaper alleged that the suspended commissioner also played a significant role in the political disagreements between Governor Nasiru Idris and Senator Garba Musa Maidoki. According to these sources, his actions allegedly undermined the APC’s political interests in Kebbi South. These allegations have not been officially confirmed by the state government beyond the announced suspension.
“If You Dig a Pit…”
Further investigations by Democracy Newsline Newspaper revealed a common sentiment expressed by some APC members in the area. They referred to the Hausa proverb:
“If you dig a pit for another person, dig it shallow because you may fall into it yourself.”
According to these party members, the three suspended political figures—all from the Zuru Emirate—were perceived by some within the party as having worked together to ensure that Senator Garba Musa Maidoki would no longer remain in the APC. They argued that recent disciplinary actions taken by both the APC and the Kebbi State Government have dramatically altered the political landscape.
Democracy Newsline Newspaper also contacted a close associate of Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, Hon. Dantani Yalo, for his reaction to the suspensions.
According to Yalo:
“This is the work of God. They continued with political hypocrisy until it eventually turned against them.”
He further claimed that efforts had previously been made to reconcile Senator Maidoki with Governor Nasiru Idris and restore peace within the APC, but those attempts were unsuccessful.
Yalo maintained that Senator Maidoki had consistently sought unity within the party before eventually deciding to leave the APC.
In his view, the recent suspensions demonstrated that some of the individuals allegedly responsible for the crisis had now faced political consequences.
The suspensions mark one of the most significant disciplinary actions taken by the APC in Kebbi State in recent years and are expected to reshape political alignments, particularly within the Zuru Emirate and Kebbi South Senatorial District.
Political analysts believe the developments may influence future party reconciliation efforts and preparations for upcoming political contests, while stakeholders continue to watch closely for further decisions by both the APC leadership and the Kebbi State Government.
