Atiku’s Campaign: Age Won’t Hinder His 2027 Presidential – Hon. Dimeji Fabiyi

Hon. Dimeji Fabiyi, former Director of Youth Mobilization for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaigns in 2019 and 2023, has responded to concerns about the former vice president’s age, asserting that it will not prevent him from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Fabiyi’s comments came after Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State suggested that age should be a factor in deciding presidential candidates. While Makinde did not directly mention Atiku, the former vice president would be 81 by the time of the next election, sparking speculation about his candidacy.

In response, Fabiyi dismissed the age concerns and advised Governor Makinde to “spend more time with intellectuals and good literature rather than with heavy drinkers.” He added that such an approach would help Makinde avoid making statements like those of his ally, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who once boasted about enjoying a 40-year-old whiskey after Atiku’s previous election loss.

Fabiyi defended Atiku’s fitness for office, stating that the former vice president was “of sound mind and body, intellectually far beyond Makinde.” He further emphasized Atiku’s extensive experience and cosmopolitan worldview, arguing that these qualities uniquely qualify him for the presidency.

Fabiyi even challenged Makinde to an intellectual debate with Atiku, suggesting that the governor’s youthful confidence would be quickly humbled in such a setting. Reflecting on his nearly 30-year association with Atiku, Fabiyi praised the former vice president’s intellectual prowess, pointing out the vast personal library that speaks to his dedication to knowledge.

“Atiku doesn’t indulge in expensive wines or associate with heavy drinkers,” Fabiyi said. “He’s a lifelong reader who values wisdom over luxury.” Fabiyi concluded by advising Makinde to avoid comments suggesting that leadership is about physical strength rather than wisdom, warning that such remarks could undermine his credibility.
