Grief and fear have enveloped Fesken Rafi community in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State following a deadly attack by suspected bandits that claimed the lives of at least 20 residents, leaving scores of families devastated and renewing concerns over the persistent security challenges facing rural communities across northwestern Nigeria.
The attack, which occurred earlier this week, is one of the deadliest incidents recorded in the area in recent months. Survivors and community leaders described scenes of panic as armed assailants reportedly stormed the village, unleashing violence that resulted in multiple deaths and forced many residents to flee their homes.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the growing threat posed by criminal armed groups, commonly referred to as bandits, whose activities have continued to disrupt social and economic life in several parts of Kebbi State and the wider North-West region.
In a show of solidarity with the affected community, Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, on Saturday led a high-powered government delegation to Fesken Rafi to commiserate with bereaved families and assess the extent of the destruction.
Addressing residents during the visit, Senator Tafida expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured the community of the government’s commitment to strengthening security measures.
“The government shares in your grief during this painful period. We are determined to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice and that adequate measures are put in place to protect lives and property across Kebbi State,” he said.
The deputy governor announced that the state government would collaborate closely with security agencies to enhance surveillance, deploy additional personnel, and provide operational support aimed at preventing future attacks and restoring confidence among residents.
Community leaders informed the delegation that the assault had not only resulted in significant casualties but had also displaced several families, disrupted farming activities, and heightened anxiety among residents who depend largely on agriculture for their livelihoods.
Chairman of Arewa Local Government Area, Alhaji Sani Tela, described the attack as a painful setback for ongoing efforts to improve security in the area. He appealed for sustained security operations to prevent a recurrence.
Similarly, the member representing Arewa Constituency in the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Hon. Nuradeen Kangiwa, commended Governor Nasir Idris’s administration for its swift response and continued support for affected communities.
According to him, government intervention has provided reassurance to residents, but more needs to be done to address the root causes of insecurity and protect vulnerable rural settlements.
Traditional rulers who received the delegation acknowledged the government’s efforts but stressed the need for long-term infrastructure development to complement security operations.
Speaking on behalf of the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, the Dikkon Kabi, Alhaji Kabiru Sulaiman, urged the state government to prioritise the construction of a road linking Fesken Rafi to the nearest major highway.
He noted that poor road access has often hampered rapid security responses and delayed emergency assistance during attacks.
“A good road network will not only improve security response time but also stimulate economic activities, facilitate movement of goods and services, and improve the overall well-being of our people,” he said.
Also speaking, the District Head of Bui, Alhaji Abubakar Dan-Malam, appealed for the establishment of additional security outposts in vulnerable communities across the local government area.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that inadequate infrastructure, difficult terrain, and limited access to remote settlements often provide opportunities for criminal groups to operate with relative ease.
The latest attack comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across Nigeria’s North-West region. Despite several military operations and government interventions, many rural communities continue to face recurring threats from armed groups.
Residents of Fesken Rafi are now calling for sustained security presence, humanitarian assistance for affected families, and concrete measures that will restore peace and allow them to return to their normal lives.
As the community mourns the victims, expectations remain high that renewed government action and stronger security collaboration will help prevent further bloodshed and bring lasting stability to the area.
The tragedy serves as another stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms, improved rural infrastructure, and community-based approaches to tackling insecurity in vulnerable parts of the country.
