In a poignant display of empathy and leadership, Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin, on Wednesday paid heartfelt condolence visits to bereaved families in Kano, acknowledging the enduring contributions of two late community figures whose lives left lasting imprints on society.
The first stop was Unguwa Uku in Tarauni Local Government Area, where the Deputy Senate President met with the family of the late Alhaji Saidu Suleiman, described by many as a pillar of grassroots development and a voice of wisdom in community affairs. Residents recalled his decades of tireless service, marked by advocacy for unity, youth empowerment, and social cohesion.
Speaking during the visit, Senator Barau reflected on the significance of Alhaji Suleiman’s life, noting that “his legacy is written not just in words, but in the lives he uplifted and the communities he strengthened.” The atmosphere was one of quiet reverence, as prayers were offered for the repose of the deceased.
From Tarauni, the Deputy Senate President proceeded to Kurmawa in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, where he extended condolences to the family of his police orderly, Mujitaba Shehu, following the passing of his father, Alhaji Shehu Umar Mohammed.
The late Alhaji Shehu Umar Mohammed was widely respected in academic circles, having served as a former Dean at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education. Colleagues and former students remember him as a disciplined scholar, a mentor of integrity, and a man deeply committed to advancing education in northern Nigeria.
Senator Barau described the late academic as “a guiding light in the intellectual development of countless students,” emphasizing that his contributions would continue to resonate within and beyond the academic community.
At both homes, the Deputy Senate President offered prayers, asking Almighty Allah (SWT) to forgive the shortcomings of the departed, accept their good deeds, expand their graves, and grant them Aljannatul Firdaus.
These visits underscore a broader cultural and moral responsibility in Nigerian society, where leaders are expected not only to govern but also to share in the joys and sorrows of their constituents. In honoring the memories of these two distinguished individuals, Senator Barau reaffirmed the enduring values of compassion, respect, and communal solidarity that bind the people of Kano.
