In a disturbing development that highlights growing concerns over freedom of speech in Nigeria, U.S.-based Nigerian political commentator and social media influencer, David Emamuzou Uyeh, has filed a formal petition to the Nigeria Police Force over an alleged plot to assassinate his elderly mother and several members of his family in Warri, Delta State. The petition, submitted through his legal representatives, James Ogwor & Associates, on October 3, 2025, alleges that politically motivated thugs connected to unnamed government figures are behind the threats.
The petition outlines a disturbing narrative in which David Emamuzou Uyeh’s consistent commentary on Nigeria’s insecurity—especially terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry—has angered certain political loyalists. David Uyeh, known for his outspoken posts calling on the government to do more in the fight against insecurity, has alleged that some members of the political elite may be complicit in perpetuating the nation’s crises.
According to the petition, the backlash against David Emamuzou Uyeh’s online activism has escalated from online threats to direct physical intimidation of his family. The most alarming incident occurred on October 1, 2025, when a group of masked, armed men stormed his family home in Warri, threatened his aged mother, and promised to burn down the family house and assassinate any relative they found—unless David Uyeh stopped commenting on national issues.
The attackers reportedly issued specific warnings, naming individual members of the Uyeh family such as
Uyeh Agnes (mom),
Peter Akwevagbe Uyeh,
Uyeh Joshua Ajiri , Sammy Okposin Deborah mrs (nee Uyeh) etc,
to prove that their threat was well-coordinated and informed. David Uyeh’s mother, said to be frail and vulnerable, was deeply terrified and traumatized by the experience and remains fearful of a repeat attack. The event has thrown the entire Uyeh’s family into a state of panic and has prompted calls for urgent protection.
Following the attack, Mr. Peter Uyeh, a brother to David, lodged a formal complaint at B Division Police Station, Okumagba Avenue, Warri, on October 2, 2025. While the report has been officially filed, the family’s legal team is now urging the Inspector General of Police, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, and the Area Commander in Warri to take immediate and coordinated action to investigate the incident and secure the family.
Mr David Uyeh’s legal representatives asserted that their client will not be cowed into silence. Describing him as a law-abiding patriot, the petition insisted on his constitutional right to freedom of speech and demands that the Nigeria Police identify and prosecute those behind the threats. The legal team further emphasized that the attack poses a grave danger not only to individual safety but also to the democratic values of the freedom of expression in Nigeria.
A member of the Delta State Civil Rights Network described the threat as “a dangerous escalation in the war against dissent,” warning that inaction could lead to tragic consequences.
As investigations begin, the Uyeh family remains a red flag on high alert, With public attention now focused on the case, pressure is mounting on the Delta State Police Command to act swiftly and decisively. Many hope that by bringing the matter to light, further violence will be averted and those behind the attempted intimidation will be brought to justice .
