Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, Pro-Chancellor Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) and Rep Bassey Akiba, member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, have extended their warmest felicitations to Nigerians on the celebration of the country’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
In their separate messages, they accentuated the need for unity, peace, cohesion, inclusion, and unrelenting dedication to democratic norms.
Governor Otu in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Nsa Gill, reiterated his unwavering commitment to upholding the tenets of democracy and delivering tangible benefits to the people of Cross River State.
The governor extended his congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT), Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, and Senate President Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, on the significant occasion of Democracy Day.
“Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s democratic journey and renew our dedication to its core principles,” Governor Otu stated, adding that “As Governor of Cross River State, I am committed to ensuring that our state not only upholds these principles but also reaps the rewards that a thriving democracy can provide for its citizens.”
Governor Otu emphasized that “Democracy is more than just elections; it is a system of government that guarantees fundamental human rights, equality, and the rule of law.
He highlighted the importance of citizen participation, accountability, and inclusive governance.
“My administration is dedicated to fostering an environment where citizens can freely express themselves, where transparency and accountability are paramount, and where governance is inclusive and responsive to the needs of all,” Otu avowed.
The Governor further assured the people of Cross River State that his administration remains focused on improving their quality of life through investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, as well as by creating a supportive environment for businesses to flourish.
“These are essential elements of a vibrant democracy that empowers its citizens,” he maintained.
The Cross River helmsman also called on the citizens of Cross River State to actively participate in upholding democratic norms by engaging in civic duties, holding leaders accountable, and promoting peaceful dialogue.
“Together, we can build a more inclusive and prosperous Cross River State,” Governor Otu stated, adding that “As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember that democracy is an ongoing process that requires the commitment and active participation of every citizen. My administration is dedicated to upholding democratic principles and delivering the benefits of democracy to the people of Cross River State.”
The FUOYE Pro-Chancellor, a former Senate Leader and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ndoma-Egba, said Nigerians must continue to have faith in Nigeria’s democracy and its future.
He maintained that democracy undoubtedly remains the best system of governance despite some challenges associated with it.
“Though we have had a number of missed turns and in a crisis of expectations, democracy remains our best option, and we must keep faith. Democracy is not a destination but an endless journey. We must keep moving,” Ndoma-Egba remarked.
Dwelling on the significance of June 12, the legal luminary and ex-Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Board Chairman, who represented Cross River Central in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly between 2003 and 2015, opined: “June 12 remains a watershed in Nigeria’s political history. It was a day Nigerians demonstrated our infinite possibilities as a nation, possibilities of zeal, determination and unity. It was the day we chose democracy.”
Rep Akiba, the Deputy Chairman House Committee on Healthcare Services, on his part, said in his statement that “June 12 marks our nation’s 26 years of unbroken democracy, the story of our resilience, strength, courage, and renewed hope. This year’s theme, ‘26 years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development,’ is a clarion call to recommit ourselves to the ideals of good governance and inclusive development.
“We acknowledge the courage of Nigerians who stood against oppression, fought for the sanctity of the ballot, and demanded a government of the people, by the people and for the people.
“As we commemorate this day, we must continue to work together to deepen democratic values, strengthen our institutions, and ensure that every Nigerian enjoys the dividends of democracy – regardless of ethnicity, religion, or status.
“Let us continue to engage constructively, participate meaningfully, and support policies and leaders that promote good governance, peace, and progress.
“May Nigeria continue to thrive as one indivisible nation built on the foundation of justice and unity.
“Happy Democracy Day!
“God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
