Dr. Muyi Aina’s Medical Outreach in Egbe Delivers Over 1,000 Emergency Treatments, Celebrates New Birth

A groundbreaking medical outreach led by Dr. Muyi Aina, the Executive Director and CEO of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), has made an enormous impact on Egbe community, Yagba West local government areas of Kogi State. The two-day event, held in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Kogi state government and Bobaselu Initiative, has transformed lives through critical surgeries and emergency care, reaching over 1000 patients and counting.

One of the most memorable outcomes of the outreach was the stabilization and successful transfer of a pregnant woman who presented with severe pre-eclampsia. With an alarming blood pressure of 240/110 mg, the woman was in a critical condition when she arrived at the outreach center. Thanks to the quick action of the medical team, she was stabilized and referred to ECWA Hospital, where Dr. Aina’s team covered her full medical expenses. Following her transfer, she delivered a healthy baby, marking a truly heartwarming milestone for both the mother and the outreach team.

In addition to this high-risk case, the outreach provided a range of life-changing surgeries, with 20 major procedures successfully carried out. These included cataract extractions, herniorrhaphies, hydrocoelectomies, lipoma excisions, and appendectomies. Many elderly residents, some who had been visually impaired for years, benefited from cataract surgeries, restoring their sight and independence.

The team distributed 150 pairs of prescription glasses, giving renewed vision and relief to community beneficiaries who had struggled with impaired sight. 12 more cataract extractions funded by the outreach team are currently ongoing at General Hospital, Kabba.

For beneficiaries like Mrs. Janet Alade, a 65-year-old cataract surgery recipient, the outreach was life-altering: “I had given up hope of ever seeing clearly again. Today, I can see my grandchildren’s faces. It’s a miracle,” she shared, her voice filled with emotion.

The initiative was staffed by a team of skilled surgeons, nurses, and healthcare workers who tirelessly attended to hundreds of patients, many of whom received free medications and follow-up consultations.

Represented by his wife, Dr. Bukky Aina, the NPHCDA boss who was recently honored with a traditional title as the Bobaselu of Egbe land, expressed immense satisfaction at the positive outcomes of the outreach. “Our goal was to bring primary healthcare to those who need it the most, and I am deeply humbled by the impact we were able to make in the lives of the Egbe people. Seeing the smiles on the faces of those we’ve helped, especially the safe delivery of a child, reinforces our commitment to reaching more communities like Egbe,” he remarked.

He expressed his gratitude to the state government, traditional institution and stakeholders from Yagba West for the support that made the outreach possible.

Earlier, the Coordinator of the outreach, Dr. Zakari Usman, said the outreach marks a significant healthcare milestone for the Egbe community, where access to advanced medical procedures such as cataract surgeries and appendectomies has traditionally been limited. He informed that the event also provided screenings and consultations, ensuring a holistic approach to health and well-being for residents. “Despite having concluded the official two-days outreach, our team has also donated drugs to the cottage hospital in Egbe which can cater to additional 1000 people who needs it, free of charge.

The Coordinator appreciated the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Oluwasegun, a stakeholder from Yagba West who worked closely with the team during the planing of the outreach. He also praised the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adams Abdulazeez who despite his absence coordinated with the Team towards a successful outreach.

As the outreach concluded, the Chairman of Yagba West local government area, Hon. Tosin Olokun, expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Aina for providing the much needed medical intervention in the community. He also praised the doctors and other health workers for their professionalism and deligence at work.
