KATSINA — An alleged intermediary accused of facilitating an arms transaction for a bandit group has reportedly disappeared after collecting ₦95 million intended for the purchase of sophisticated firearms, in a development that has sparked widespread debate and renewed concerns over the financing of criminal networks in Nigeria’s North-West.

The incident, said to have occurred in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, was disclosed by the member representing Musawa/Matazu Federal Constituency, Abdullahi Aliyu, popularly known as General, during an interview with NTA Hausa.

According to the lawmaker, the suspect received the money from a bandit leader after promising to procure high-grade weapons within a short period. However, the intermediary allegedly vanished without delivering the firearms, and his whereabouts have remained unknown since the transaction.

Aliyu alleged that the failed arms deal has had serious consequences for security in the area. He claimed that the disappearance of the suspected gun runner prompted a notorious bandit leader identified as Kachalla Maha to withdraw from an existing peace arrangement, thereby disrupting ongoing efforts aimed at reducing violence in parts of Katsina State.

The lawmaker further alleged that, following the collapse of the arrangement, armed groups operating in the Matazu axis intensified attacks on rural communities through increased levies, forced taxation and livestock extortion. He said several vulnerable villages have come under renewed pressure, with residents facing growing economic hardship amid persistent insecurity.

The claims have heightened public concern over the activities of criminal syndicates operating across the North-West, where banditry, kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling and attacks on farming communities continue to pose significant security challenges despite ongoing military operations.

The report has also generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing disbelief that a suspected criminal network could itself become the victim of an alleged fraud. While some users mocked the reported incident as “fraud among fraudsters,” others noted that the consequences could be severe if armed groups retaliate against surrounding communities in an attempt to recover the missing funds.

Security analysts say the case, if verified, underscores the enormous financial resources available to criminal organisations and the sophisticated networks that sustain the illegal arms trade across the region.

They warn that failed transactions within criminal circles often trigger reprisals, internal conflicts and renewed violence, with innocent civilians frequently bearing the greatest burden.
Experts also argue that the alleged incident highlights the urgent need for stronger intelligence gathering, tighter border security and intensified efforts to disrupt illicit arms trafficking routes supplying criminal groups operating in Nigeria’s North-West and beyond.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement confirming the alleged ₦95 million transaction, the identity of the missing intermediary, or the reported withdrawal of Kachalla Maha from peace negotiations. Independent verification of the claims remains pending.

The latest allegations have nevertheless reignited national conversations about the financing of banditry, the proliferation of illegal firearms and the complex challenges confronting authorities in restoring lasting peace to communities affected by years of armed violence.

Residents of affected communities have called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen protection for vulnerable settlements while intensifying efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for fuelling insecurity across Katsina State and the wider North-West region.
