Feeding of Inmates in Nigeria, Correctional Service Denies Sharp Practices, says Approved Allowance is N750.00 Per Day.

By Femi Michael – Abuja

The Nigeria Correctional Service has described a misleading report circulated in some section of the media to the effect that Nigerian Inmates are being fed with two hundred naira only (#200) daily instead of the seven hundred and fifty naira (#750) approved by the Federal Government as false, baseless and mischievous, as it is an efforts to rubbish the loft achievements of the current leadership of the service.

This was disclosed in a press statement signed by the National Public Relation Officer, Nigeria Correctional Service, Headquarters, Abuja, AD Umar MNIM, ANIPR and made available to journalists in Abuja, describing the report as false, misleading, and mischievous in all ramifications.

He said it is a known fact that the approved allowance for inmates in Nigeria is #750 hence it is an open secret that is well known by public, stressing that vendors are paid the approved amount upon completion of supply.

“Contract for ration supply is usually made public, and the conditions clearly stated for interested vendors to apply in line with the public procurement act 2007”

He further disclosed that every Custodial Centre has a ration committee that exercises supervisory role over quality assurance of supply, preparation, and distribution to inmates to ensure that they are fed within the approved budget, pointed out that the authorities have, over the years, demonstrated commitment towards improving inmates’ welfare in terms of feeding as well as empowerment through effective reformation and rehabilitation programmes.

He noted that the Service has consistently make efforts to appeal to the Federal Government for upward review of feeding allowance of inmates to reflect the present economic realities, says it will be unfair and unpatriotic for anyone to fabricate lies just to denigrate the Service.

He advised the public to discountenance the false report and be rest assured of the irrevocable commitment of the Controller – General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa FICMC MFR, to work for the general good of persons in custody even as genuine support of well-meaning Nigerians will continue to be appreciated.
