Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant show of political solidarity and intergenerational leadership dialogue, His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, CON, the former Governor of Kano State and immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), received the Forum of Deputy Governors of Nigeria at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja, on a courtesy visit.
The delegation, led by His Excellency Chris Alozie Akomas, former Deputy Governor of Abia State and Chairman of the Forum, was warmly welcomed by Dr. Ganduje, who expressed deep appreciation for the gesture. The visit was not merely ceremonial—it served as a platform for robust discussions on governance, national cohesion, and the evolving role of deputy governors in Nigeria’s democratic space.
In his remarks, Dr. Ganduje praised the Forum for fostering unity among current and former deputy governors across party lines and geopolitical zones. He emphasized the need for institutional memory, mentorship, and continuity in governance, noting that deputy governors play a crucial yet often underappreciated role in the administration of state affairs.
> “Deputy Governors are not spare tyres—they are strategic partners in governance. Your ability to support your principals while also preparing for future leadership roles is critical to the stability of our democracy,” Ganduje stated.
He also spoke extensively about his own political journey from deputy governor to two-term governor and eventually National Chairman of Nigeria’s ruling party, offering insights and advice drawn from decades of public service.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, H.E. Chris Akomas expressed gratitude to Dr. Ganduje for receiving the Forum and commended his legacy of inclusive leadership and national service. He noted that the Forum was committed to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting unity among federating units, and ensuring that the voice of deputy governors is effectively represented in Nigeria’s national discourse.
> “Your Excellency, we are here not just to pay homage, but to tap into your wisdom. You’ve been where many of us have been, and have gone on to serve at the highest levels of party leadership. Your experiences are invaluable to us as we chart our own paths,” Akomas said.
The Forum also discussed the need for enhanced collaboration between states, a more defined constitutional role for deputy governors, and greater involvement of former leaders in policy think tanks and advisory roles.
Beyond the political camaraderie, the meeting delved into issues of national importance, including:
The need for sustained peace and unity across regions.
Strategies to tackle insecurity and promote community-driven development.
The importance of youth inclusion and women empowerment in governance.
Strengthening party discipline and internal democracy within political parties.
Dr. Ganduje used the opportunity to advocate for constructive political engagement, urging emerging leaders to prioritize national interest over personal ambition.
> “We must remain committed to the ideals of justice, equity, and development. Nigeria is greater than any individual, and we must all play our part in building a stronger nation.”
The visit concluded with mutual commitments to continued engagement between the Forum and elder statesmen like Dr. Ganduje. The former governor pledged his availability for mentorship and strategic consultations, noting that “leadership is a continuous responsibility—even after office.”
The Forum of Deputy Governors of Nigeria has, in recent years, emerged as a key player in the nation’s political architecture, serving as a bridge between current governance structures and future political leadership. This meeting with Dr. Ganduje further cements that role, reinforcing the importance of experience, dialogue, and national unity in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
