In a significant political development aimed at stabilizing governance in Kano State, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally transmitted the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor.
The nomination, conveyed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, follows constitutional provisions outlined in Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. The section empowers a state governor to appoint a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.
The deputy governorship seat became vacant after the voluntary resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026—a move that triggered widespread political consultations across party lines and stakeholder groups within the state.
A Strategic Nomination
Sources within the Government House reveal that the nomination of Garo followed extensive consultations with political leaders, technocrats, and community stakeholders, reflecting the administration’s effort to ensure continuity, stability, and effective governance.
At 48, Garo is widely regarded as a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience spanning grassroots mobilization and high-level governance.
His career trajectory includes serving as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
He also held the influential position of Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, where he played a key role in coordinating intergovernmental relations at the local level. His tenure as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs further strengthened his administrative credentials.
Notably, Garo was the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections, a role that elevated his political visibility and broadened his network across the state.
Political analysts view the nomination as a calculated move by Governor Yusuf to consolidate governance and bridge political divides in Kano. By selecting a figure with cross-party experience and deep grassroots connections, the administration appears focused on fostering inclusivity and administrative efficiency.
“The choice of Garo signals a pragmatic approach to governance,” said a political analyst in Kano. “It reflects the governor’s intention to prioritize competence and experience at a time when the state requires steady leadership.”
If confirmed by the Assembly, Garo is expected to bring his extensive administrative expertise to bear in supporting the governor’s development agenda, particularly in areas of local government reform, traditional institution engagement, and service delivery optimization.
The Kano State House of Assembly is expected to commence the screening process in the coming days. Observers anticipate a thorough but swift confirmation, given the urgency of filling the vacancy and maintaining executive balance.
As Kano navigates this transition, the nomination underscores the dynamic nature of its political landscape—where experience, negotiation, and constitutional order continue to shape leadership decisions.
Democracy Newsline will continue to monitor developments as the confirmation process unfolds.
