Iyamoye Must Return to Ancient Landmarks
By Ade Iyamoye
Nestled in the heart of Ijumu Local Government Area, Kogi State, Iyamoye stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and resilient spirit of the Okun people. Historically, this town has been a beacon of unity, tradition, and progress. However, recent challenges, particularly in traditional leadership, have tested the community’s cohesion. To reclaim its esteemed position, Iyamoye must revisit and uphold the foundational principles that once made it a model of communal harmony and development.
Honoring Tradition Through Due Process
The chieftaincy institution in Iyamoye has long been a pillar of its societal structure. The disputed Obadofin and other titles, in particular, holds significant cultural and administrative importance.
As sons of same Father, interests should be channeled towards unity, progress and development for the sake of existence than extinction.
It is painful to know that Iyamoye has human, innovative and capital potentials to blossom but yet in shambles and ruins for issues and grudges that brothers can sit over pounded yam and egusi soup and settle.
Our interest should be the future of Iyamoye and how development will hit Iyamoye not fighting over titles.
Without failing to acknowledge the work already done, the traditional council in charge should do all within its power to end this power tussle, it is killing Iyamoye. It has lingered for too long.
Embracing Unity for Sustainable Development
Beyond traditional leadership, Iyamoye has faced challenges in land disputes, notably with neighboring Ekinrin-Adde. The intervention by the Kogi State Governor facilitated a peace meeting between the communities, paving the way for the proposed Federal University of Entrepreneurship in the area . Such initiatives highlight the potential for progress when unity and dialogue are prioritized.
Infrastructure development is also on the horizon, with projects like the construction of a community hall in Iyamoye under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development . These developments, however, require a stable and harmonious community to realize their full potential.
Revitalizing Cultural Heritage
Iyamoye’s rich cultural tapestry, woven through festivals like the Egungun masquerade, serves as a unifying force and a link to ancestral traditions. These cultural expressions not only preserve history but also foster community pride and cohesion. Revitalizing and promoting these traditions can play a crucial role in uniting the community and attracting cultural tourism.
*Charting a Path Forward*
To restore Iyamoye to its ancient landmark of unity and progress, the following steps are imperative:
1. Adherence to Due Process: All community decisions, especially regarding chieftaincy titles, must follow established procedures to maintain legitimacy and prevent disputes.
2. Promotion of Unity: Community leaders and members should prioritize dialogue and reconciliation to resolve conflicts and build a cohesive society.
3. Support for Development Projects: Active community involvement and support are essential for the successful implementation of infrastructure and educational projects.
4. Cultural Preservation: Investing in cultural festivals and traditions can strengthen community identity and promote social cohesion.
Embracing these principles, Iyamoye would overcome current challenges and set a course for a future marked by unity, cultural pride, and sustainable development.
