Political tension is mounting in Kaduna State as strong indications emerge that Governor Uba Sani is set to embark on a significant cabinet reshuffle that may see the removal of two key commissioners over alleged incompetence and underperformance.
Highly placed sources within the corridors of power reveal that the Governor is seriously reviewing the performances of members of his executive council, with particular attention on Hon. Sadiq Mamman Lagos, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Hon. Ahmed Maiyaki, Commissioner for Information.
Insiders allege that dissatisfaction has been building steadily among party stakeholders, civil servants, and members of the public over what they describe as ineffective leadership in critical ministries.
Hon. Ahmed Maiyaki, a former Managing Director of the Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC), is reportedly facing criticism from journalists who accuse him of being inaccessible and unresponsive to media inquiries. Several correspondents who spoke on condition of anonymity claim that repeated calls and official messages to the Information Ministry often go unanswered. Some media practitioners also allege preferential treatment toward a select group of journalists, a development they say undermines transparency and inclusivity.
Journalists, widely regarded as watchdogs of democracy, argue that sidelining the press weakens public trust and obstructs the free flow of information between government and citizens.
On the other hand, Hon. Sadiq Mamman Lagos is said to be grappling with complaints bordering on high-handedness and strained relationships with political stakeholders. Sources within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State allege that his management style has alienated elders and influential party figures, with murmurs of quiet defections surfacing in some local government areas.
Political observers interpret the anticipated shake-up as a strategic recalibration ahead of the 2027 general elections. Governor Uba Sani, who assumed office in 2023, is widely believed to be consolidating his political base while seeking to strengthen governance outcomes across ministries.
Analysts note that cabinet reshuffles are not uncommon in democratic administrations. They often serve as instruments to inject fresh energy into governance, address public dissatisfaction, and realign policy direction. In Kaduna’s case, the move may also be aimed at restoring confidence among party loyalists and the broader electorate.
“If decisive action is not taken, the administration risks reputational damage that could impact its electoral prospects,” a senior political analyst in Kaduna observed. “However, a timely and transparent restructuring could attract political heavyweights and consolidate support ahead of 2027.”
In an effort to obtain official clarification, Democracy Newsline reached out to three serving commissioners in the state executive council. However, they declined to comment on the allegations, directing inquiries to the Governor’s office. Their silence has further fueled speculation about internal tensions within the administration.
There are also claims from within government circles that some commissioners feel constrained and insufficiently empowered to act independently, a factor that may have contributed to perceived inefficiencies in service delivery.
Kaduna State, a politically strategic state in northern Nigeria, has long played a pivotal role in national politics. Governance performance in the state often resonates beyond its borders, influencing regional political dynamics.
As pressure mounts, residents and stakeholders await official confirmation from the Government House. Should the Governor proceed with the reported dismissals, it would signal a strong message on accountability and performance standards within his administration.
For now, Kaduna remains on edge, watching closely as events unfold in what could become one of the most consequential political decisions of Governor Uba Sani’s tenure.
Democracy Newsline will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
