The Kano State Executive Council has approved the conversion of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education back to Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, while maintaining its status as a degree-awarding institution.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Baba Halilu Dantiye, the decision was made to enhance educational quality and streamline management in the state’s higher education sector.
The move follows the 18th meeting of the Executive Council, held on September 18, 2024, after extensive consultations with stakeholders and recommendations from a high-powered committee tasked with reviewing the institution’s status.
The committee raised concerns over the transition to university status, citing risks such as the potential loss of experienced lecturers, salary disputes, and administrative challenges.
Dantiye noted that similar institutions nationwide have operated successfully as colleges of education while offering degree programs through the “Dual Mode” system, as introduced by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCE).
This system allows institutions to maintain their core structure while expanding their academic offerings.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the immediate dissolution of the university’s management, with the Vice Chancellor directed to hand over to his most senior deputy.
The government assured that current students would not be affected, as they will continue their studies without disruption.
Additionally, the university’s certificate will be preserved for future use, and the institution will continue to offer both its traditional courses and new degree programs.
This strategic decision underscores the Kano State Government’s commitment to ensuring the growth, stability, and academic excellence of its educational institutions.
