Kogi Education in Crisis: A Call for Urgent Intervention – Prince Friday Ogungbemi

By Amuda Jimoh – Lokoja

The educational system in Kogi State is facing a severe crisis due to poor funding, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient learning materials.

This is according to a press statement issued by Prince Bolarin Friday Ogungbemi, Publisher of The Policy and Lawmakers Magazine, at a press conference in Lokoja on September 10, 2025.

Ogungbemi highlighted that the current state of education in Kogi is characterized by dilapidated infrastructure, insufficient learning materials, and a shortage of qualified teachers.

He noted that the recent over 100% increase in tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions will further exacerbate the problem, making it difficult for students from struggling backgrounds to access education.

The affected institutions include Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State University (KSU), Kabba, and Kogi State Polytechnic (KSP), Lokoja.

Ogungbemi called on the Kogi State government to review the tuition fees, increase funding for education, recruit qualified teachers, and implement the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers Law.

He emphasized that the government must prioritize education and take urgent action to address these issues to ensure quality education for all.

The publisher also highlighted the neglect of primary and secondary education in the state, citing the lack of new secondary schools in the 21 Local Government Areas and the shortage of teachers.

He urged the government to establish new secondary schools in Lokoja metropolis and recruit more teachers to address the shortage.

Ogungbemi concluded by calling on the government to redefine its priorities and stop playing lip service to the education sector.

He emphasized that urgent intervention is needed to save Kogi State’s educational system from further decay.
