Kogi Lawmaker Facilitates Revamping of Abejukolo Water Scheme, Township Road Rehabilitation
In a major step toward improving access to clean water and enhancing infrastructure, Hon. Umar Yahaya, the member representing Omala State Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, has facilitated the revitalization of the Abejukolo Water Scheme and the rehabilitation of critical township roads in the area.
Speaking with journalists during a briefing, Hon. Yahaya revealed that a Joint Technical Team from the Kogi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), the Ministry of Water Resources, and the Ministry of Environment has been deployed to Omala to commence the water scheme revamp.
According to him, the intervention is aimed at addressing the long-standing water scarcity affecting residents, especially in communities impacted by coal mining activities.
“The plight of my people who have long suffered due to lack of access to clean drinking water has remained a top priority for me,” Hon. Yahaya said.
“Following my appeal to the Kogi State Government, we are now seeing concrete steps with the deployment of a technical team to commence work on the Abejukolo Water Scheme and to provide boreholes in several affected communities.”
The benefiting communities include Otti, Icheke, Ajedibo, Ikeffi, Oliya, Ibadan, Kaduna, Efiwo, Ajaja, Ogoh-Echa, and Abejukolo, among others.
In addition to the water intervention, Hon. Yahaya also announced that the rehabilitation of the Abejukolo Township Road, with full asphalt overlay, is set to begin soon. He described the project as a “significant milestone” in the collective effort to improve infrastructure in the constituency.
“Our people deserve better roads and clean water. The commencement of road rehabilitation in Abejukolo is a clear indication that development is reaching our rural communities,” he stated.
Hon. Yahaya, who currently serves as the Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Works and Infrastructure, extended his appreciation to the Kogi State Government, fellow lawmakers, and stakeholders who supported the initiative.
“I am grateful to the Governor, the leadership of the House of Assembly, and all stakeholders who believed in this vision. This is a collective success, and we will continue to work to bring more development to our people,” he added.
Residents of Abejukolo and surrounding communities have lauded the intervention, describing it as timely and life-saving. Many expressed optimism that the efforts would drastically reduce waterborne diseases and improve the quality of life in the area.
The projects are expected to be completed in phases over the coming months, with the lawmaker promising regular updates on progress and community engagement throughout the implementation process.
