LNRBDA to Explore Untapped Potential of Omi Dam and Kampe Irrigation Scheme – Engr Olumoroti
The Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA) has embarked on a strategic tour to assess and revamp the Omi Dam and Kampe Irrigation Scheme in Yagba West Local Government Area, Kogi State. Led by Managing Director/CEO Engr. Olumoroti George Olusola, the team inspected the facilities on Monday, June 2, 2025.
According to him, the Omi Dam, with a 250 million cubic meter reservoir, was built to irrigate over 4,000 hectares but remains underutilized, stressing that the Kampe irrigation scheme, covering over 7,200 hectares, currently supports about 3,000 hectares.
He said major issues observed include silted canals and damaged irrigation structures, necessitating urgent intervention.
Engr. Olumoroti pledged to seek federal support for rehabilitation and enhance collaboration with the state government and private investors to unlock the scheme’s potential for boosting food production under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He further noted that the Authority aims to Irrigate 10,000 hectares in Kwara and Kogi for rice and sugar cane cultivation, Support farmers with modern farming practices and technical assistance and also to foster public-private partnerships to drive agricultural development
The LNRBDA team paid courtesy visits to local traditional rulers, who expressed gratitude and appealed for help with Erosion control, Youth employment, Potable water supply
The MD assured continuous partnership with the communities for development and empowerment.
In interactive sessions with farmers, the Authority reaffirmed its commitment to infrastructure upgrades, technical support, and improved productivity.
