Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, who represents Kebbi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has extended food assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Dankolo community, Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as part of efforts to alleviate the hardship faced by residents affected by insecurity and displacement.
The intervention, which involved the distribution of food supplies to affected households, was aimed at providing immediate relief to vulnerable families struggling with food shortages, economic hardship and the difficult conditions associated with displacement.
The gesture was warmly received by beneficiaries, who expressed appreciation to the senator for remembering their plight and extending assistance to them at a challenging time.
The food support is particularly significant for families whose livelihoods and sources of income have been disrupted by insecurity, forcing them to confront uncertainty over their safety, shelter and access to basic necessities.
Speaking on behalf of the affected community, residents reportedly commended Senator Maidoki for the intervention and offered prayers for his success in his political endeavours and future aspirations.
They described the assistance as a welcome gesture, stressing that displaced families need sustained attention, practical support and effective government intervention to overcome their present difficulties.
However, the distribution also brought renewed attention to the grievances expressed by some residents of Dankolo over their security situation and what they described as inadequate attention to their suffering.
Some community members voiced dissatisfaction with the response of the Kebbi State Government under Governor Nasir Idris, particularly regarding their concerns about attacks, reported killings and the hardship experienced by affected households.
They also criticised the perceived lack of adequate attention from the leadership of Sakaba Local Government Area, arguing that the people they elected to represent them should be more responsive to their security concerns and humanitarian needs.
The residents further expressed disappointment over statements attributed to the local government chairman concerning reports of killings in the community. They called on public officials to acknowledge the concerns of affected families, investigate allegations of violence and ensure that the experiences of vulnerable residents receive appropriate attention.
The grievances, according to the residents, have weakened their confidence in the political leadership and raised questions about the effectiveness of existing measures to protect lives and support displaced communities.
Some residents also expressed political dissatisfaction with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, warning that their experiences and concerns would influence their decisions in the 2027 general elections.
They urged fellow residents of Sakaba Local Government Area to carefully assess the performance of political officeholders before deciding whom to support at the polls. Some said they intended to express their dissatisfaction through their votes in 2027.
Their position reflects the growing importance of security, humanitarian assistance and accountability in determining public confidence in political leaders, particularly in communities affected by violence and displacement.
Nevertheless, the allegations and criticisms voiced by the residents require a response from the relevant authorities, including the Kebbi State Government and the Sakaba Local Government Council, to establish the facts surrounding the reported incidents and clarify the measures being taken to address the community’s concerns.
Beyond the immediate food assistance, the situation in Dankolo highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to the challenges confronting displaced persons in Kebbi South. Such an approach should include improved security operations, emergency food supplies, access to healthcare, safe shelter, educational support for displaced children and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Humanitarian assistance can provide temporary relief, but long-term recovery requires coordinated action by government institutions, elected representatives, security agencies, community leaders and humanitarian organisations.
For families forced to leave their homes or whose daily activities have been disrupted by insecurity, the restoration of safety and dignity remains essential. They need assurances that their concerns will be heard and that practical measures will be taken to prevent further suffering.
Senator Maidoki’s intervention therefore offers an opportunity to draw attention to the humanitarian needs of the affected population and the responsibility of public officeholders to ensure that vulnerable communities are not left behind.
As the 2027 general elections approach, the concerns raised by residents of Dankolo are likely to keep security, public accountability and the welfare of displaced persons firmly on the political agenda in Kebbi South.
For the people of Dankolo, however, the immediate priority remains clear: lasting peace, protection of lives, access to basic necessities and a credible commitment from the authorities to address their plight.
