Nigeria has long battled with a range of security challenges—abductions for ransom, insurgency, banditry, and other criminal vices—plaguing both the northern and southern parts of the country. However, since the appointment of Malam Nuhu Ribadu as the National Security Adviser (NSA) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a transformation has begun. The days of terror and instability, especially in Northern Nigeria, are slowly becoming a thing of the past as Ribadu’s leadership and coordination bring hope and results to affected communities.
Under Ribadu’s strategic guidance, the burst of criminal networks and the effective rescue of kidnap victims have shown that the tide is turning. People across northern states such as Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, Plateau, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, and Kogi are witnessing a rapid improvement in security. A standout achievement was the swift rescue of 20 medical students from the University of Maiduguri who had been abducted while traveling. This was a clear demonstration of Ribadu’s effective coordination of Nigeria’s security forces, including the Army, Airforce, Police, DSS, and NSCDC, as well as local hunters and non-formal security groups.
Through Ribadu’s leadership, notorious terrorists such as Halilu Sububu and Buhari Alhaji Halidu, also known as “Buharin Yadi,” who terrorized Katsina, Niger, and Zamfara states, have been neutralized. These victories are not just milestones for the security forces but are also sources of joy for the affected communities, many of whom now feel a renewed sense of safety. Such successes have drawn praise and appreciation for the Nigerian troops and security personnel.
Ribadu’s ability to achieve these results is not surprising, given his long-standing record of excellence in public service. His understanding of security goes beyond mere operations; he also recognizes the need for coordination between agencies, intelligence sharing, and following financial trails to cripple the kidnapping and banditry economy. His comprehensive approach targets not just the militants but the money-laundering and financing networks that sustain terrorism and crime.
In the Southeast, Ribadu has also made strides in reducing attacks by secessionist groups like IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) and other armed actors. Using both kinetic (military) and non-kinetic (dialogue and peaceful intervention) strategies, Ribadu has been able to significantly reduce violence. The sit-at-home order that once paralyzed businesses in the region is now being widely ignored as life gradually returns to normal. Ribadu’s resolve to address armed groups through intelligence and decisive action has started to bring peace to communities that were once besieged by violence.
Improving the capacity of Nigeria’s security forces is a priority for Ribadu. He has put emphasis on building the operational abilities of the police, army, and other agencies, understanding that sustainable peace comes from institutions that are capable, well-equipped, and respected. His agenda prioritizes ensuring that the security architecture can withstand internal and external threats, particularly from non-state actors.
What makes Ribadu’s interventions especially noteworthy is his ability to strike deals and honor them, fostering trust across different sectors and preventing potential crises from escalating. His focus on regional cooperation, youth empowerment, and cross-border coordination further highlights his understanding that security solutions must be multifaceted. His efforts align with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which is dedicated to creating a secure, stable, and prosperous Nigeria through enhanced security force cooperation and efficiency.
Ribadu’s role as NSA is undeniably demanding, requiring a fine balance of dexterity, hard work, and consensus-building across security and political structures. Yet, he has lived up to the responsibilities of this critical public sector role, overseeing a marked improvement in security in the North-west, North-central, and beyond. His holistic approach—combining military strength with intelligence, diplomacy, and socio-economic development—provides a thoughtful and strategic pathway toward restoring national stability.
As Ribadu continues to coordinate the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies, the nation is hopeful that the era of rampant kidnappings, banditry, and terrorism will soon be confined to history. The steps taken under his leadership thus far signal a future where security, peace, and development can thrive across Nigeria.
