The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that its mission and aspirations remain aligned with the interests of the Nigerian masses.
The President of the association, Olushola Oladoja, made this known while addressing journalists at a Students’ Mentorship Summit held at the Nigeria National Merit Award House on Thursday, March 26, 2026. The summit was themed “Skybound to Leadership: A Multi-Sector Approach to Youth Development in Tech, Aviation, Oil and Gas, Security, and Anti-Drug Cybercrime Advocacy.”
Oladoja explained that under his leadership, NANS would adopt a less confrontational approach toward government policies. Instead, the association will focus on result-oriented engagement mechanisms through negotiation, consultation, and communication. He emphasized that confrontation would only be considered as a last resort after all peaceful avenues have been exhausted.
Responding to criticisms from some quarters that the association has become timid under his leadership, Oladoja dismissed such claims as misperceptions that do not reflect the true stance of NANS.
He further noted that the provision of perimeter fencing in some tertiary institutions across the country by the federal government was a direct outcome of NANS’ constructive engagement. According to him, this intervention was aimed at addressing security breaches, particularly in campuses located in Nigeria’s North-East region.
Oladoja also commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing students’ welfare through various policies introduced by his administration. He highlighted the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has supported many indigent students, as well as efforts to reduce incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) through improved welfare initiatives.
