Nigeria @64: Destined to Be Great, Hardship Just a Passing Phase

By Wilson Macaulay

As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Anniversary, the nation stands at a critical crossroads. The celebration of our freedom from colonial rule, achieved in 1960, brings a moment for deep reflection. While the dream of a united, prosperous, and peaceful nation has faced numerous challenges over the decades, it is undeniable that Nigeria is destined for greatness. The current phase of hardship, though intense, is temporary, and brighter days lie ahead.

A Nation Rich in Potential
From its inception, Nigeria has been blessed with abundant resources—both human and natural. With over 200 million people, a strategic geographical location, and diverse cultures and languages, the country is a powerhouse in Africa and beyond. It boasts of one of the largest oil reserves in the world, arable land for agriculture, and a vibrant youthful population eager to drive innovation and development.

However, despite these assets, Nigeria’s journey has been riddled with socio-political and economic challenges. Corruption, weak institutions, and ethnic tensions have undermined progress, leading to missed opportunities for development. Nonetheless, Nigerians remain resilient, driven by an unshakable belief that their nation can, and will, rise to greatness.

Leadership: The Core Challenge
At the heart of Nigeria’s problems is a lack of visionary leadership. Successive administrations have struggled to implement effective policies, manage resources, and foster national unity. Poor leadership has led to economic mismanagement, insecurity, and declining trust in government institutions. The political elite, with few exceptions, have too often prioritized personal enrichment over national development, leaving a disillusioned populace in their wake.

The youth, who make up a significant portion of the population, are particularly frustrated. They demand good governance, transparency, and accountability. The #EndSARS protests of 2020, which sought to end police brutality, were emblematic of broader frustrations with the state of the nation. During the protests, some voices even called for military intervention, a sign of desperation for change. However, the Nigerian military, showing maturity, chose to respect the country’s democracy, refusing to intervene in civilian matters.

Democracy: Our Last Hope
Amid the turmoil, Nigeria’s democracy remains its saving grace. Despite the imperfections, democratic governance offers the best chance for reform. The ability of the people to elect leaders, voice their concerns, and demand accountability is a fundamental pillar that must be safeguarded.

The 2023 general elections, though contentious, offered a glimpse of the people’s resolve to shape their future. While imperfections persist in the electoral process, the expanding role of civil society and youth activism indicates a growing demand for good governance.
The independent report of Yiaga Africa and Action Aid on the report, demonstrated our capacity to monitor the electoral process.
However, for democracy to truly thrive, leadership must change. It is time for leaders who understand the pains and aspirations of the people. For me l over rated President Tinubu, because I argued with my friends that he will bring his experience from Lagos to better Nigeria having done well in Legos. Yours Sincerely k was damned wrong. Truth be told,Buhari was bad, but President Tinubu is a disaster. We have not had it so bad.

We are routing for
Leaders who will prioritize national development over personal gain, and who recognize that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity.

The Hardship: A Passing Phase
The current hardships facing Nigeria are real. Inflation has eroded purchasing power, unemployment has skyrocketed, and insecurity continues to plague large parts of the country. The recent fuel subsidy removal and naira devaluation have added to the economic burden on ordinary Nigerians, leading to widespread frustration.

Yet, history has shown that great nations often pass through turbulent phases before they achieve lasting progress. The United States endured the Great Depression; lndia suffered hunger, China faced years of internal strife before its economic rise; South Africa overcame apartheid to become a leading economy in Africa, Ghanians were shoe makers and Mobile tailors going round to mend people’s clothes. That time a bunch of cedi could not equate naira, Mexico Peso at a point was valueless until they went back to the drawing board.

Nigeria case is no different. The challenges we face today are not insurmountable. With proper leadership, sound economic policies, and the active participation of the citizenry, Nigeria can emerge stronger from this phase of hardship.

The Road Ahead
Nigeria’s destiny is too great to be derailed by temporary difficulties.
As we look to the future, key reforms are essential:

Economic Diversification: Nigeria must move away from its dependence on oil. Agriculture, technology, manufacturing, and services present vast opportunities for job creation and wealth generation.
I advised Governors across board to embrace Agriculture. The is something good we can achieve from giving our attention to any area of Agriculture.
Government policies should encourage investment in Agriculture using the PPP MODEL.

Strengthening Institutions: The fight against corruption must be intensified.
The Yaya Bello’s in our means are not stronger than the whole Nigeria.Strong institutions are the bedrock of any functioning democracy. Very soon we shall another Ribadu , to do the EFCC work for us. Olukayode is a chicken Man.
We need Transparency, accountability in Nigeria . Very soon we shall get there. The rule of law should guide governance at every level.

Youth Empowerment: Nigeria’s young population is its greatest asset. Government and private sector initiatives should focus on education, skills development, and entrepreneurship to harness the potential of the youth.

Insecurity: Security is the foundation of national development. The government must address the root causes of insurgency, banditry, and communal violence. Investments in security infrastructure and personnel are crucial to restoring peace and stability.

National Unity: Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity. Efforts must be made to heal ethnic and religious divisions, promoting a sense of unity and shared purpose among all Nigerians. I wrote a piece recently where I emphasized the need for National id card instead of Local Government Certificate of origin.
This will make us come out of our ethnic cocoons.

A Vision for a Brighter Tomorrow
At 64, Nigeria remains a young nation, with enormous potential yet to be fully realized. The current phase of hardship is painful, but it is not permanent. The people of Nigeria have endured much, but their resilience, creativity, and drive remain unbroken.

A brighter tomorrow is not just a dreamy; it is within reach. It will require collective effort, sacrifice, and a commitment to the values that make Nigeria strong: unity, democracy, and justice. As we celebrate 64 years of independence, let us reaffirm our belief in the nation’s potential and work together to build the Nigeria we all desire—one where prosperity, peace, and progress reign supreme.

Nigeria, at 64, is destined to be great. The hardship we face today is just a passing phase, and the dawn of a better tomorrow is on the horizon.
